Meet Rina Rovinelli

We were lucky to catch up with Rina Rovinelli recently and have shared our conversation below.

Rina , thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
In 2009 I stood in front of 4 investors on the CBC television show Dragon’s Den. I was incredibly confident in my business and certain I’d wow them. When I opened my mouth, my body betrayed me! I stammered and struggled to get the words out. I could barely breathe and my heart was beating out of my chest. It was a painful moment but I realized that powerful communication comes through our bodies. It has to push past imposter syndrome and insecurities, It takes practice and confidence and belief in our value and right to be seen and heard. I went on to pour my heart out to the Dragon’s before receiving an offer of $250K. When I walked away that day it was with the understanding that the most inspired voice in the room, is the most powerful. I’ve gone on to create my business, Speaker Slam, that is dedicated to helping others be seen and heard.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the Co-Founder of Speaker Slam. We run a Speaker Development Agency. We help cultivate the next generation of Changemakers through speaking and video. We provide comprehensive training programs, video marketing solutions, and brand-building services for mission-driven & heart-centered speakers, authors, coaches, and entrepreneurs.

We are best known for creating North America’s Largest Inspirational Speaking Competition, where you can showcase your life story and inspire others to take action. The competition offers a platform for speakers to gain recognition and win prizes worth up to $10,000.

Our agency has produced numerous successful speakers who have achieved remarkable feats, such as securing paid speaking engagements, giving TEDx talks, publishing books, receiving media coverage, being featured in documentaries, going viral, leading movements, creating events, and much more. Most importantly, they go on to inspire schools, charities, and corporations with their messages and drive positive change at the grassroots level.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My 3 greatest values align with my skills:

Creativity and Innovation: I’m an entrepreneur through and through, and I pride myself on being a visionary. I think any successful business needs an audacious vision. You need to continually innovate and create to stay relevant and current and fresh. Over the years we’ve met people where they are at – whether they were Emerging Speakers who were just starting out or Momentum Speakers who were thriving! We innovate to create products and services that will excite our audience. It’s the key to our success.

Risk Taking. You need to take risks to succeed. You need to launch out and test. Business is about course correcting. If you spend too much time trying to perfect your business, you’ll never leave the research zone. It takes courage to launch, but the that’s where the victory lies.

Freedom: I’ve prioritized freedom in my business journey. It’s allowed me to step into entrepreneurship and blaze my own trail. It’s allowed me to choose my own adventure and march to the beat of my own drum. It’s not a life without work and obstacles, no, but it’s a life I’ve been able to design for myself.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who is thriving in life! They are a speaker, author, coach, entrepreneur or expert and they are looking to build their brand with speaking. They are ready to have massive momentum in their life and they are eager to take center stage and shine.
