We were lucky to catch up with Rinat Mingazdinov recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rinat, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
My ability to take risks developed naturally—I simply had no other choice. In 2002, I decided what I wanted to do with my life and chose tattooing. I had to start from scratch, with no teachers, no YouTube, just trial and error. Any successful result came only after countless mistakes that I had to go through over and over again.
All these choices, experiments, and risks eventually led me from Tomsk to LosAngeles. Looking back now, I can say that I’m grateful for where my decision in 2002 has taken me. Every risk I took was worth it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a tattoo artist who started my journey in this industry without formal art education. It was a risk, but it allowed me to develop my own style and approach, different from traditional techniques. For me, a tattoo is primarily a body decoration, a way of self-expression through art on the skin. I am proud to create beautiful, unique pieces that become a part of someone’s life.
Currently, I work in Los Angeles, where I continue to develop my skills and experiment with new styles. For me, a tattoo is an opportunity to transform the body into something unique and beautiful, adding a piece of myself into each design.
I am also actively involved in tattoo exhibitions and competitions, and in the future, I plan to collaborate with renowned artists and brands, which will help me expand my creative horizons.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I think three things played a key role in my journey. First, persistence. I faced many challenges and failures, but each time, I kept moving forward. Without persistence, I wouldn’t have achieved what I have now.
Second, the ability to learn from my mistakes. I started without experience or education, but every mistake became a lesson that helped me grow as an artist. My advice to those just starting out is not to be afraid to make mistakes because it’s through them that real practice comes.
Third, creative thinking. The ability to view things from different angles and approach problem-solving unconventionally is important not only in art but in any profession. My advice to beginners is to develop flexible thinking, stay open to new ideas and approaches. The more you experiment, the more unique your work becomes.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most important thing my parents did for me is that they believed in me and always said that the key is not to sit idle but to keep moving forward. They raised me well, and this support allowed me to confidently follow my dream, despite the challenges and unconventional path. It gave me the confidence and strength to keep going and continue working towards my goal.
