Meet Ris Hovis

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ris Hovis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ris below.

Hi Ris, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
In all honesty, I feel like I haven’t fully overcome my imposter syndrome yet. There are still days that I don’t meet my expectations and I beat myself up for it. Days where I don’t feel like I have what it takes. But I have to constantly remind myself that growth isn’t linear, there are going to be so many victories and twice as many fails. I know that I need to continue to motivate myself to keep creating, (the good and the not so good). Just recently, I did a photoshoot with my sister and the results were not anywhere near what I had imaged in my head. I was so discouraged and embarrassed, I didn’t even want to show her the pictures.
In the end, I didn’t let my discouragement defeat me from getting the perfect pictures. I thought about what I liked from the photoshoot, and also what I needed to work on. The following week we redid the photoshoot and the results were stunning.
I didn’t let the embarrassment from the first shoot keep me from moving forward. What could have been left as a failed photoshoot, ended up becoming an opportunity that I learned from.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a photographer, I specialize in portrait photography but I have a wide range of experience. I love being able to capture emotions. Whether it’s joy or pain, when you look at the photo, you’re hit with these feelings that connect you to the image. In May, I did an engagement photoshoot with a young couple. Throughout the session, the couple was being playful and fun, I knew the results were going to be adorable. When editing the pictures after the shoot, I was taken back by the love and passion that was radiating from the pictures.
I love getting to capture these special moments, and all the emotions attached.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Personally, I think passion is the most important part of starting anything, without passion there is no motivation to get the ball rolling. Secondly, support from my family, friends, and peers is what really got me through my begging phase. When I doubted myself, they were there to motivate me and cheer me on. Lastly, I had the opportunity to take a photography classes in school, and it really impacted the way I utilized my camera. This was a big part in the begging of my photography career, and it continues to help me today, almost 6 years later. The biggest piece of advice I have for those who are just starting out is to be passionate about what you’re creating, and continue to challenge yourself to grow in your craft.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who is looking for traditional photos with an artistic twist. Whether you want a photoshoot for your graduation, engagement or just to spice up your instagram. i have done many kinds of photoshoots, such as: maternity, newborn, and birthday. I would love the opportunity to get to capture your special moments.
