We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rob Ayers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rob , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose after the loss of my Mom in December 2012. After her death I re discovered my passion for cars. That led me to start going to Cars and Coffee events. The first was the Cars and Coffee at Waverly Place in Cary in 2013 and then the one at the Raleigh Grande in 2014-2015. When that event stopped I decided to start Cars and Coffee Morrisville in December 2015. When it started we would have 30-40 cars show up. Through the years since, it has grown to 3,000+ cars at every event. We also have sponsors, food trucks, and a different charity every month. In July 2022 we became an Incorporated Organization which helped us grow as a community event.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
In addition to Cars and Coffee Morrisville Inc. I started Ayers Landscape and Design in March 2007. I specialize in Residential Landscape Architecture/Design and I also maintain 30 properties. Helping somebody’s vision for their yard become a reality is what motivates me every day. Establishing that relationship with someone is the most important thing. My core business principles are communication, do as you say, and surround your self with great people.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The 3 things that were most impactful to my journey are my faith in God, my parents, and my friends. My advice to anybody starting their journey is to listen to your role models and build a team with people that have strengths that are different than your own.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
When I worked at Saks Fifth Avenue from 2002-2010, my Regional Manager Stephanie had a huge impact on me and taught me the leadership/business skills that I use today. She was the best business mentor I ever had.
