We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rob Gomes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
For a big chunk of my career, I’ve found myself being the only Producer of color on projects. I used it as motivation, always worked hard, proved my creativity, and my skills, and ultimately why I was there. Sometimes there are trailblazers before you, sometimes you’re the trailblazer.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve been blessed to produce healthy TV that is mostly in the dating space, (Farmer Wants A Wife, 90 Day Fiance, Married At First Sight),
I’m excited about what’s next, I’m pitching and developing a non-scripted comedy project.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My knowledge of TV/Film production, my writing/story strength, and resilience! Early on I was a movie set P.A. for countless years, I often thought I would never get a break to produce. After 14 to 16hr work days, I would go home and work on my spec-screenplays before passing out from exhaustion.
In the end, my resilience, and learning firsthand from watching talented Directors (as well as unorganized Directors) showed me everything I needed when I finally started getting breaks.
God has you where you are supposed to be, embrace it, soak it up, when the time is right you’ll move forward with remarkable new insight.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Unplug from Hollywood. I can’t control the machine, if there’s no work, or the phone isn’t ringing, I can’t wave my hand and suddenly create a job, (I do what I can, but that only goes so far).
When I’m overwhelmed; I focus even more on family, go to the gym (sometimes twice a day), go for walks, create other forms of art, look at clouds and daydream….it’s healthy to take breaks from the business to clear your mind.
