We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rob Mcafee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
To anyone reading this: If not YOU, then WHO will it be?
I believe resilience comes down to two key factors:
1) Getting knocked down by life—again and again—and finding the strength to get back up every time.
2) Having an unshakable self-belief that fuels you, no matter the odds.
Every day, on my drive to the office, I reflect on my journey. I see myself as the “comeback kid,” replaying the major challenges I’ve faced and how I overcame them.
I think about the competitors who gave up, the people who doubted me, and even those who made snarky comments.
Those thoughts ignite a fire in me—a fire I make sure to rekindle every single morning.
The beauty of resilience is that you control how your story unfolds.
I like to ask this: If a camera followed you around, documenting your life, would the movie be worth watching?
This isn’t just a metaphor—one day, someone will tell your story.
It might be your family, friends, kids, or coworkers. The question is, what kind of story will it be?
If you come from a place of negativity or feel overwhelmed and tempted to give up, remember the question I started with: If not YOU, then WHO will it be?
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve been in the insurance industry for over five years, and for a long time, I felt like I didn’t quite fit in.
Like many people, I’m a bit unique—I enjoy having fun, and my true passion lies in genuinely helping others.
It wasn’t until I found my current agency that I finally felt at home.
My main focus here has been building our agency’s brand awareness.
We’ve grown into one of the largest and fastest-growing insurance agencies in the country, and our mission is clear: to provide exceptional service and peace of mind.
We are experts in homeowners insurance, auto insurance, life insurance, and business insurance.
But we’re not your typical agency chasing a quick buck—we operate differently.
We prioritize helping clients truly understand their policies so that when the time comes to file a claim, they can do so with confidence and peace of mind.
We are the Cherchenko Insurance Agency, and you can find us on all major social media platforms.
(If you’re an insurance agent looking to build a high-performing, profitable agency, I’d be happy to help through Insurance Sales Lab.)
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’ll keep this simple:
1) Communication.
2) Be solution-oriented.
3) Have undeniable self-belief.
For those early in your career, I want you to know—I’m with you. I’m not the oldest, but I’ve gained some solid life experience, and here’s my advice:
Surround yourself with people who are already doing what you aspire to do, and be a sponge.
Immerse yourself in the topics that ignite your passion.
Read the books, watch the podcasts, and most importantly, don’t let anyone convince you that you’re crazy for pursuing your dreams.
If you feel alone or like you don’t relate to the people around you, take it as a sign you’re on the right track. I know that can be hard to hear, but it’s the truth.
Look up the averages in any area of life—health, finances, relationships. Trust me, you don’t want to live there.
This is your life. Your family. Your legacy.
“The soul of a lazy man desires and has nothing, but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.”
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I am a Christian. God guides me. And through him, I believe anything is possible.
My wife has been a huge asset. Without her, I would not be the man I am today. (Fellas, it pays to have a wise woman at your side.)
The woman who raised me, my grandmother, taught me how to make tough decisions. How to keep my head on straight. And most importantly, to put God first.
My high school basketball coach was a major influence. He taught me to be a psycho-competitor. To have a ruthless winning attitude, which looks externally AND internally.
Finally, all of the entrepreneurs I have met throughout my journey, especially my current business partners. There is nothing like getting around the people you look up to and being a sponge. That will teach you more than any book.
