We were lucky to catch up with Robbie Gennet recently and have shared our conversation below.
Robbie, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity is a pursuit made of curiosity, imagination and drive. It takes consistent action to scratch into new ideas and a push to manifest them to their highest levels. Being creative as an adult needs to stem from the same sense of wonder and pursuit in which you fingerpainted as a child. Creativity can and should be messy and imperfect, raw and exciting, passionate and alive.
It also takes sparking the flint of inspiration rather than waiting for something to catch fire. Inspiration is not a rainstorm that randomly soaks you; it is a well that you dig, in which case a shovel must be constantly employed. Also, it takes having something to say and speaking your truths. Your perspective as an artist is focused through the lens of your creative actions.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I just finished releasing the final album of a ten-album project that came out in 2025, which included two filmed live studio performances of this new material. This has been a labor of love and catharsis and I’m really proud of the results.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Adaptability, humility and stoicism. To be adaptable is to survive changes of any size and keep a steady course. Humility comes from a sense of empathy and gratitude that keeps you grounded and able to appreciate the people and world around you. And stoicism helps the most with smoothing the journey as you go. My advice to anyone starting out: stay grateful, stay humble and stay motivated. Set goals. Develop a work ethic and a system to help you create quickly and easily.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Last year I read the Rick Rubin book “The Creative Act” and it really impacted me in my determination to release the music I made this year. Before I read that book, I had been writing and recording songs in my home studio without a thought of releasing them, just personal catharsis. After reading that book, I realized how important it was to get this music out and made a plan to do so. I highly recommend every artist read that book. It’s a liberation manifesto of self-permission that greatly helps artists overcome the blocks, self-doubts and fears that keep them from action.
