Meet Robert Alex

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robert Alex. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Robert, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from years of pushing through different jobs, challenges, and setbacks. When I started the journey of my own dog breeding mission and developing a unique designer breed, it was anything but straightforward. There were countless moments of uncertainty—moments where it felt like I was up against impossible odds. But each of those hurdles only strengthened my resolve.

Before I dove into breeding American Wolfhounds, I had a long road of different jobs and ventures before becoming an artist that often tested my patience, grit, and belief in myself. I learned, through a series of demanding and sometimes thankless experiences, that I could overcome just about anything life threw my way. Those years, full of their own struggles, gave me a deep well of perseverance to draw upon.

What many people don’t realize is that challenges and difficulties aren’t just roadblocks; they’re what forge your strength. I truly believe that if you never step out of your comfort zone, you’ll never know what you’re capable of. In my case, it was that willingness to take on challenges headfirst, to embrace the unknown, that built up my resilience over time. Each failure, each closed door, only solidified my belief that I could find another way forward.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m Robert Alex, founder of Wolves.Dog and creator of the American Wolfhound—a designer breed that blends the strength, loyalty, and intelligence of various exceptional canine lines. My journey into breeding started with a passion for dogs and the wild spirit of wolves. I didn’t just want to breed beautiful dogs but to create a unique lineage that combines heart, character, and versatility.

Building this operation from scratch took years of research, patience, and overcoming countless challenges. My focus isn’t just on producing dogs, but on crafting a breed that’s healthy, happy, and one-of-a-kind. Every American Wolfhound is bred to be mentally agile, loyal, intelligent, and a great family companion—more than just a pet, but a true lifelong friend.

What sets Wolves.dog apart is the philosophy behind it: fostering a deep human-dog connection. I’ve always embraced challenges and going beyond the norm, which is why developing this breed has been so rewarding. Seeing families light up when they meet their new companion is what drives me forward.

As for what’s next, we’re planning new litters for late next year while we expand our products and content to help owners understand their dogs better. We are also exploring partnerships focused on animal health and responsible breeding, plus potential events for dog enthusiasts.

At Wolves.dog, it’s not just about selling puppies—it’s about building a community of dog lovers who appreciate a truly unique breed.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful on my journey with Wolves.Dog were resilience, adaptability, and a passion for learning.
1. Resilience
Creating a new breed like the American Wolfhound came with countless setbacks. There were moments where things didn’t go as planned, but resilience kept me moving forward. For those starting out, expect obstacles. Embrace challenges as growth opportunities and get comfortable with discomfort.
2. Adaptability
Breeding requires constant adjustments, whether it’s refining strategies or handling unexpected issues. Staying flexible allowed me to pivot and make better decisions. My advice: stay open to change and be ready to shift direction when needed.
3. Passion for Learning
Developing a breed involves ongoing learning—genetics, health, training, and more. Curiosity drove me to keep refining my approach. For beginners, the more you learn, the more you’ll discover what sets you apart.

If I could offer one piece of advice, it’s this: embrace the long game. Building something meaningful takes time, patience, and a willingness to keep learning and adapting. Don’t be afraid to take risks and explore uncharted territory—that’s where the most rewarding growth happens.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Absolutely, I’m always open to partnering and collaborating to grow Wolves.Dog and the American Wolfhound breed. From a business standpoint, I believe the best way to expand visibility and reach is through meaningful partnerships with those who share a passion for dogs and a commitment to quality.
