We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robert Bedont a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Robert, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Hard work has always been a legacy of both my father’s and mother’s side of the family. Growing up on a hay farm, we learned that we had responsibilities at a very early age. We worked along side my parents and grandparents tending the garden, feeding the animals, mucking out stalls, milking the goats, and (when we were strong enough) bucking hay.
My family was always among the first to arrive, and last to leave any church or community event. I remember asking my Dad: “Why are we still here stacking chairs?” “It’s who we are” was his reply. As a grandchild of immigrants, he knew the importance of working hard and he passed that along to me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My day job is with Utah Symphony | Utah Opera where I produce the paid advertising assets. In addition I produce and edit the company’s podcast (The Ghost Light Podcast). I also have an active private music studio of 12-16 students. I am especially proud of these wonderful musicians. They are all active in their school and community music programs.
I also draw a lot of joy in performing with the Aspen Wind Quintet. These fantastic musicians push me to be my best.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
A phrase from my college mentor bounces around in my head almost consistently: “Anything great takes Time, Patience, Perseverance, Dedication, and Discipline.” These qualities have been key for any success I’ve achieved.
I’ve found the best way to develop any of these attributes is to put myself in opportunities outside of my comfort zone.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents were always busy! Not only were they faithful partners and wonderful parents, but they were also heavily involved in church responsibilities, running the local soccer league, local community building, and a myriad other little things. I am inspired that they did all of these things, and also found time to be at soccer games, music performances, and all the other events that our little family was involved in.
Watching them find joy in service, and balance busy home, professional, and personal lives has been key for managing a similar busy schedule with my own family.
