Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robert Defibaugh . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Robert, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Personal resilience comes from a commitment to improve every facet and tool in your arsenal. I’ve witnessed many strong people in my life and have always believed that if someone is doing something, then I should be able to do the same. There are so many inspiring people with so much less that never give up and keep surviving earning that daily bread, while attempting some half-court shots – eventually one of those seems to go in. That gets me to suit up and show up every day- with a good attitude.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I create experiences with food – concentrating on the unique and personal tastes of clients and their guests. Many of our events are the visions of producers and we will match the cuisine to their concepts and customers. We are constantly playing the part of consumer and sampling what is good out there and taking our own interpretation and making it work for our needs and the needs of our clients.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I always began at the bottom of every industry or profession and kept my eyes open and my mouth shut. I’m never learning if I’m talking, but I knew where everything was and who was in charge of what, so I became a problem solver and therefore made myself a valuable part of any operation. The advice I would give to people early in their journey would be to never complain about their job and to stay humble after success. I’ve not gotten into trouble for something I didn’t say.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
So many books and authors seemed to arrive at exactly the right time. “When the student is ready, the teacher arrives…” Malcolm Gladwell BLINK
Harvey Mackay- BEWARE OF THE NAKED MAN WHO OFFERS HIS SHIRT
These two books read 25 years apart spoke to me. I also had an extremely resilient, self made father who led mostly by example and was not one for advice, but when he spoke about his experiences, they were lessons to me.
