We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Dobson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robert below.
Hi Robert, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Truth be told I have not always been the confident guy I am today. I grew up a skinny pimply kid. I was the smallest and youngest kid in my class all the way up from pre-school to 8th grade. And usually the only kid that looked like me as well, being not only black but the light-skinned kid. Actually, my dad refused to invest in me concerning sports, esp. football because he didn’t want to deal with the medical issues that could possibly come from playing because he was afraid the bigger player would put me in the hospital because of my size. But I later realized that I was a pretty fast runner and ran track during high school I actually ran the 110 meter hurdles among other events, but you should know that the hurdles as well as the 300 meter hurdles is not for the weak at heart. I finally realized that I had a body that was not only fast but agile. I also joined the Air Force R.O.T.C. in high school. I gained a sence of pride wearing the blue uniform and became the Color Guard Commander, where me and my squad would present the American Flag at home games, parades, etc. It gave me appreciation and accomplishment I needed to increase my self-esteem. Finally, I was starting to shine through and I felt revelant. I was not only responsible for myself but for others and I was awarded and recognized when I won a race and set me up for joining the military later on after college. Getting into the “Whos Who of American People’ also gave me the confidence to do even more, that I did not think I would ever have before. I had to learn public speaking as an Officer in the US Army because I had to brief Generals. Now, I am not a fan of public speaking but by force and a voice and diction class, I learned how to speak good english and pronunciation and I also realized I had a voice that made people pay attention to me. People always said I should do radio or work in broadcasting. I realized that acting was where I could display this talent and liked that people loved hearing my me speak. I received a college track grant that lead to two records. As an athlete I started working out and there is nothing like a athletic build to boost how you feel about yourself when you look in the mirror or the compliments you get from people. For me confidence and self-esteem did not come early or easy. I was definitely that ugly duck that girls steered away from, but once I figured out how to defend myself from the bigger guys and found a way to love myself first, by putting God first in my life and letting him guide me O was good to go. I survived my youth and now I feel I can do anything I put my mind to, using my mind, my body, and my voice.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am very proud to be apart of the amazing award winning cast of Triggered. Triggered is a cinematic fun film. I play a marvel character by the name of Bishop Lucas, who I a bad-ass in his own right. We are premiering in Time Square this November, so I am very excited about it. Hopefully we will be working on Triggered 3 very soon. Thanks to the writer, creator, director and producer of the film non other that my good friend and brother, Marcus Jordan who also plays Blade. I work in law enforcement, and enjoy the work of security and bodyguard for high profile clients in the capacity of a professional executive protection officer. As a 21 year US Army Veteran, with a Criminal Justice Degree and an MBA I have been able to secure jobs like contracting for the FBI in Washington DC. Now I live in Las Vegas and I also have my own business as a travel agent. My website is called Dobson Dynasty Travel Agency @robertdobson.inteletravel.com
I am from a very small town by the name of Dobson, NC and this is my way of giving back to my community as well as putting my hometown on the map. I am also the writer and producer of my short film called, The Way We Work” that can be found on YouTube and I wrote my first stage play, called “The Beginning.” You can find more of acting my work on IMDB. I just try to continue striving for higher feet’s to better myself and maybe inspire others along the way. That’s the legacy I would want to leave behind when I am gone.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First and foremost do what makes you feel good and what is fun. Make sure you can feed yourself a long the way. No one likes a smootcher. I started out doing the traditional thing. Go to school to get a good education then find a good government job, lol. But that was not fun for me. Now after spending time in LA and finally far way from the military and government I feel a bit more relaxed and I can finally think on things I actually want to do that makes me happy. Acting does that for me. I feel I have a natural ability to use my voice and charm to be in front of a camera lens making stories. I always wanted to do this as a child but I had no way of knowing how I would get from sitting in front of the tv, and into the tv lol. The skills I was able to acquire that most helped me to where I am today is all the struggles of life experiences and learning some things the hard way. Having been homeless allowed me to appreciate the two bedroom loft I now secured for myself. Hard work does pay off, so there is no time to sit on the stool of “do nothing”. You got to make your own way in life for yourself and no one is going to do this for you, but you. Secondly, I’m a pretty good observer and communicator. It isn’t always about having something to say but to listen and then just go do something with what you have heard or learned. I am not the type to procrastinate. I put a plan in place then envision it and then I make it happen. I focus on it until it is done. Its very simple for me. Sometimes I have lot of money and sometimes I have none at all but at the end of the day, eventually I have to go and find a way to feed myself. I have had all kinds of jobs from bagging rocks to driving Uber. It’s very humbling but humble gets you fed, then you work on the long term stuff. Sometimes you have to go back to what you know. You may have to dust off that MBA and update that resume and get back in the game but ultimately acting is now my love. I have to find ways to afford my rent and still be on set. I have always had an internal no non sense determinational drive. It’s called being realistic. I have never been the one to live in a fantasy world because again that doesn’t get you feed, and I am a huge eater. There were times I didn’t feel good about myself and I didn’t like the way I looked. I was suicidal a lot as a teen, but once I started thinking more about what I wanted to be in life, I put a plan together and I did not have time to think about anything but working towards my goals. If you do not have a goal, you can not reach for it. But one thing you have to realize is that even though you never reach the goal, you can look back at how far you came. You started something and that is what matters so you can’t beat yourself up for not winning the race but just know you are a winner for just being in the race.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
This is very simple for me. My grand-daddy. Every summer I got to go and visit my grandparents when school was out. My granddad was a US Army Soldier. He wore his uniform to work everyday. I loved going on the base. It was like being in a whole different city of its own. People were smarter and nicer and things just made more sense. I loved going to the bowling alley where my granddad would teach me how to bowl. I loved going to military events like the fourth of July lights display. Life was way better with my grandparents than with my parents at home. There were no arguments and there was always food on the table. I did not want for anything. We went to the beach and to the amusement parks. Life was so fun and peaceful. It set the stage for me that this was the life I am suppose to have and I would strive towards it. It was all about happiness. Being kind to each other, It made me realize that life can be special and rewarding and fun. I became a better person being around my granddad. I learned to respect and obey him and right from wrong. One thing that really stood out to me about my granddad is that he was special. I was playing outside and there are ants everywhere. Ants are very busy insects, always working. But as a kid I was playing with them and then I would smash the ant. My granddad saw me doing this and he said don’t kill the ants, they haven’t done anything to you. They are special like you will be one day. They earn their living so why you got to kill God’s creatures that do nothing but work? It takes nothing to be kind to a strangers or God’s nature and other life forms just because you dont understand it or because you can. It only takes a moment to give food to someone who doesn’t have any or give a helpful hand. It’s not about having everything you you want for yourself, its about giving to those who have nothing at all. I learned in order to have, you must give. This is a give and take world and success is not how much you have but how much you can give.
