We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Grosz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robert below.
Robert, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Repeated people who tell us, don’t quit, you are doing good things and we support you for that.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We’ve been making jams and jellies since 2018. We have always focused on more fruit in the jar. Many commercial brands are 80% sugar or sugar byproduct. Most of our products are more fruit than sugar and have the flavor that is more like you’d get at grandma’s house.
Our challenges are a higher price point. There are times when looking at competitors who sell “jam’ that they’re retail is within 15% of what it costs me to make a jar. It means there is a disconnect because not all jam is great, and conveying that difference without sampling is a challenge.
Our number one product is Kentucky Candy, a candied jalapeno. We have worked on a bbq sauce based on that brine and we’re excited to launch that in the next couple months.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
There are only three things in business you can control. 1. Quality. Don’t suck. 2. Pricing. Be of value, not overpriced. A Yugo and a Mercedes each have value to different people. 3. Consistency. Fast food is crud, but it’s convenient and cheap. In our business it means showing up if it’s cold, in the rain, when you are broke and when you hit a home run. Consistent to availability and consistent to quality of product.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Be curious. When something isn’t right, or not working… why? If you keep hearing the same thing… why? And address it. Stand by your values, your commitment to the product, like you would a child and don’t make impulsive or cost related choices.
