We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Mann. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robert below.
Hi Robert, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
I naturally gravitate toward things I’m good at, but staying in that comfort zone rarely leads to growth or big breakthroughs. Knowing this, I push myself to take risks and step outside my comfort zone. As an artist, taking risks is essential—without it, your work can become stagnant, and people can sense that lack of energy and evolution.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Robert Mann, a visual artist based in Los Angeles, was raised in Boulder, Colorado, where he was deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. His upbringing was steeped in mindfulness practices, which he honed over the years through disciplines such as Japanese archery, meditation, and flower arranging. This rich background in mindfulness is evident in his art, where he employs the philosophy of “spacious mind / healthy mind” to create works characterized by the calm of earth tones and the simplicity of Zen art. Mann’s approach to art reflects his belief in the delicate balance required in the creative process. He describes the challenge of maintaining focus and awareness while being precise and assertive, yet remaining loose and non-rigid—a balance he refers to as “the razor’s edge.” This philosophy permeates his work, infusing it with a sense of tranquility and depth. Currently residing and working in Downtown Los Angeles, Robert Mann continues to explore and express these principles through his visual art, creating pieces that resonate with both simplicity and complexity.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Qualities:
Resilience and Endurance: The journey of an artist is filled with challenges, uncertainties, and moments of doubt. Developing resilience and endurance has been essential for pushing through those tough times. Creativity often comes from navigating tension and difficulty, and this persistence has allowed me to create work that resonates deeply with power and presence.
Patience: Patience has been crucial in my process, particularly when working with intricate compositions or refining textures and layers. It ensures that each piece evolves naturally and with intentionality, allowing for meaningful and impactful results.
Artistic Integrity: Staying true to my vision and committing to the balance between simplicity and depth has been vital to my success as an artist. I strive to ensure that every piece holds energy and power, maintaining a sense of presence that resonates with viewers. This dedication to artistic integrity has allowed me to create work that reflects my personal style while continuing to evolve and grow.
Advice:
Cultivate patience and embrace the journey, giving yourself time to develop meaningful ideas and techniques. Struggles and setbacks are inevitable, but resilience and endurance will help you navigate uncertainty and transform challenges into creative fuel. Focus on mastering the fundamentals—composition, texture, and balance—while remaining open to experimentation and growth. Don’t shy away from taking risks and being bold; it’s often in those moments of bravery that your most powerful and innovative work emerges.
