We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robert Trumper a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My purpose unfolded naturally with my growth, fueled by the troubling realization that large corporations were producing damaging products and improper disposal was jeopardizing our planet. From reusing bags during family trips to the grocery store to witnessing plastic waste in my hometown, San Diego, my determination deepened. The sight of litter tarnishing beaches emphasized the pressing need for change. In 2020, co-founding the Ecological Servants Project with a like-minded partner revitalized my optimism. Through our efforts in cleaning up San Diego, I witnessed the profound impact of collective action. Guiding EcoServants, I discovered a profound sense of purpose in the positive influence on both lives and the environment. Despite obstacles, I remain steadfast in achieving my vision, even if it requires a lifetime of dedication.
Through the Ecological Servants Project, over 500 EcoServant volunteers have voluntarily collected 30,000 lbs. of debris and recycled over 2,400 lbs. of recyclable litter, we’ve begun kindling hope. Communities have started to unite and have begun recognizing our shared responsibility. This journey taught me every small action contributes to a greater purpose. As EcoServants, we can tangibly restore our planet’s beauty for future generations. Remember, At ESP, We Serve The Planet.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an expert in the nonprofit sector, deeply committed to restoring our planet’s natural beauty. At EcoServants, we strive to educate the public about the detrimental impact of litter on our environment and actively involve them in our initiatives. Our most noticeable efforts involve cleaning up litter along highways with individuals assigned by San Diego courts to do community service, along with enthusiastic volunteers who join our dedicated team of EcoServants. We also organize park and beach cleanups across San Diego and Los Angeles, California, where we aim to garner maximum media attention.
By showcasing our impactful actions to viewers from the comfort of their homes, we motivate them to join the solution. Witnessing our volunteers express surprise and satisfaction at the positive impact of their contribution is truly heartwarming. They often say they never realized how easy it is to make a significant difference through even a small amount of time dedicated to cleaning up litter.
As leaders in our community, we collect an average weight of 292 lbs of litter and recycle 18.5 lbs each month during our Adopt- A- Highway and Community Cleanups. Our commitment to creating a cleaner world extends internationally, as we work on partnering with like-minded corporations, businesses, organizations, and enterprises interested in making a difference.
However, despite our passionate efforts, we need your help to carry out our mission to its full potential. Our dream is to establish environmental schools, focused solely on ecological topics such as permaculture, sustainability, and alternatives to traditional farming, like ranching. These schools will be open to all ages, as we firmly believe that education should not discriminate. Our students in Kenya, who currently face challenging living conditions, will benefit significantly from such initiatives. We have partnered with Hydro Reach Project, an astounding organization that has designed a life-bag capable of filtering water effectively. This essential resource will save countless lives in regions where clean water is scarce. Our goal is to start distributing 300 of these life-bags to Kenya, making a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. Every effort counts, and together, we can preserve our Earth for generations to come.
Currently, we proudly have over 500 dedicated individuals who identify as EcoServants, ranging from all walks of life. Joining EcoServants is not just about becoming a hero for the environment, but it is also vital for the future of our planet and the generations to come.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, I would say that my three most important qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that had the most impactful influence were observation, selflessness, and expertise in the ecological sector. To those who are early in their journey, I offer the following advice on developing or improving these qualities:
Observation: You need to possess the ability to keenly observe the world around you is indeed invaluable. Take time to notice the details, patterns, and behaviors that others may overlook. Practice active listening and pay attention to both verbal and non-verbal cues. Begin cultivating a curious mindset and seek out diverse perspectives. Start engaging in activities like meditation or reflection to deepen your observational skills. Observation is not just about seeing but also about truly understanding.
Selflessness: Recognize and embrace your own uniqueness while acknowledging the equality of all beings. Learn to cultivate empathy and compassion for others if you don’t already. Actively seek opportunities to contribute to the happiness, education, and success of those around you. Practice generosity and kindness in your daily interactions. Dedicate time to engaging in volunteer work or community service to broaden your perspective and develop a sense of selflessness. True happiness lies in uplifting others, not uplifting yourself.
Expertise in a specific field: You need to identify an area of knowledge that aligns with your passion and interests. Invest every ounce of time and effort in developing expertise in that field. Pursue formal education, engage in self-study, and seek mentorship or guidance from experts. Remember to stay updated with the latest trends, research, and developments in your chosen domain. Be certain to embrace a growth mindset and never stop learning. Becoming an expert takes dedication and continuous effort.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The number one challenge currently faced by the (ESP) Ecological Servants Project is acquiring funding to continue our vital mission. As the sole working board member, I have invested a significant amount of my personal earnings from various jobs to keep our important project alive. However, it has become apparent that relying solely on my own resources is going to be insufficient in sustaining our purposeful goals.
To overcome this challenge, I am implementing a focused and determined approach:
Strategic Funding Research: I am conducting extensive research to identify potential funding opportunities that align with our organization’s mission. This includes exploring grants, sponsorships, and other financial avenues available to support environmental initiatives that we have here at Ecological Servants Project.
Compelling Case Development: I am crafting a compelling case to present to our potential funders. By effectively communicating our organization’s mission, goals, and the impact of our work, I aim to highlight the value and significance of supporting the Ecological Servants Project.
Collaborative Partnerships: I am actively seeking collaborations with like-minded individuals, organizations, and businesses in the environmental sector. By establishing strategic partnerships, we can leverage their resources, networks, and expertise to increase our funding prospects. It’s a win win for everyone.
Creative Fundraising Strategies: As the sole board member, I am implementing innovative fundraising initiatives that maximize our reach and impact. This includes organizing fundraising events, launching online crowdfunding campaigns, and exploring other creative avenues to engage the community and encourage donations.
Efficient Financial Management: I am dedicated to maintaining meticulous financial planning and budgeting practices. By closely monitoring our expenses, exploring cost-cutting measures, and ensuring transparency in our financial reporting, I aim to optimize our limited resources and drive our people and our future towards success.
Personal Development and Grant Writing: I am committed to applying my grant writing skills to develop persuasive proposals. By learning about the best practices in grant writing and tailoring grant proposals to each funder’s specific requirements, I will improve our chances of securing funding and expanding our vital mission.
Despite being the sole board member, my determination and passion for our critical mission drive me to overcome this funding challenge. By implementing these strategies and constantly seeking opportunities to expand our network and resources, I am confident in our ability to acquire the funding necessary to continue EcoServants and make a positive impact on our planet.
