Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robin Frey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Robin, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in my upbringing as a self-starter. Growing up homeschooled, I learned the value of hard work from an early age. My parents instilled discipline and responsibility through hands-on tasks—my dad, a construction worker, often had me helping with labor-intensive projects around the house. From splitting and stacking firewood to assisting with home renovations, I was involved in every step. I helped build our basement and learned the ins and outs of home improvement—from painting and wallpapering to full-scale remodeling. These lessons weren’t just about getting the work done—they were about pride in craftsmanship and doing things right the first time.
This mindset carried over into my professional life as I climbed the corporate ladder, starting in sales and eventually becoming a leader in marketing. I brought that same work ethic, resilience, and self-sufficiency to every role. Now, as the artist and owner of Wonder Moss, I carry those lessons forward. Every piece I create, every project I take on, reflects that hands-on, get-it-done attitude I learned early on. It’s this commitment to quality and perseverance that has allowed me to build my business and keep pushing forward, no matter the challenges.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
At Wonder Moss, I create unique, preserved moss art installations that bring the calming beauty of nature into indoor spaces. My work combines biophilic design with fine art, using moss, ferns, and other organic elements to craft immersive pieces that transform a room into a peaceful sanctuary. Whether it’s a large moss wall for a commercial space or custom art pieces for a home, each installation is carefully designed to connect people to nature and improve their well-being.
What excites me most about my work is the ability to create environments that evoke emotion—whether it’s the soothing energy of a moss wall in a spa or the dynamic energy of a fern-inspired piece in an office. The idea that nature can be integrated into everyday spaces to boost mood, reduce stress, and foster creativity is incredibly rewarding. Plus, I love that my art doesn’t require maintenance, so people can enjoy the beauty of nature without the hassle of watering or upkeep.
I’m also passionate about making biophilic design more accessible to people. That’s why I offer hands-on consultations with each client, ensuring that their vision for their space comes to life in a way that’s meaningful and personal to them. It’s not just about creating art—it’s about crafting experiences.
In terms of exciting updates, I just finished up with the Junior League Designer Show House, where I had several pieces on display. It was an incredible opportunity to showcase how nature-inspired design can elevate any space, and I’m grateful for the chance to be part of such a fantastic event. Additionally, I was recently awarded a Creative Impact Fund Grant for an interactive moss art installation that will be accessible to the community later this year. This project will provide an opportunity for people to engage with art in a hands-on, immersive way. I’m also working on expanding my community involvement by hosting workshops that introduce people to biophilic design and the wellness benefits of incorporating nature into their homes and businesses.
If you’re looking to bring nature indoors, or if you’re just curious about the magic of preserved moss art, Wonder Moss is here to help you create a serene, peaceful space that’s grounded in the beauty of the natural world.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I believe the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, creativity, and adaptability.
Resilience: The ability to overcome setbacks and keep moving forward has been crucial. Whether it was facing challenges early in my career or navigating the uncertainty of starting my own business, resilience has allowed me to stay focused on my long-term goals. My advice to those early in their journey is to embrace setbacks as learning opportunities rather than failures. Keep going, even when the path isn’t clear, because when things feel uncomfortable, that’s when the exciting stuff happens—growth happens outside of your comfort zone.
Creativity: Creativity isn’t just about artistic ability; it’s also about problem-solving and thinking outside the box. In my journey, creativity helped me see opportunities where others might not. For anyone starting out, I recommend nurturing your creativity by consistently exploring new ideas and staying curious. Don’t be afraid to take risks and push boundaries. Some of my most meaningful breakthroughs came from being in that uncomfortable space of uncertainty.
Adaptability: The ability to pivot and adapt to changing circumstances has been key to my success, especially in the ever-evolving world of business. Whether it was adjusting my business model or finding new ways to engage with customers, being flexible and open to change has kept my business growing. For anyone just starting out, I encourage you to remain open-minded and willing to evolve as you learn more about your industry, your craft, and your customers. Being adaptable means you can thrive, even when things aren’t going as planned.
To those early in their journey: Trust yourself, and don’t be afraid to take small steps every day. Be patient, embrace discomfort, and stay open to growth and learning—it’s all part of the process.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, I am always excited to collaborate with like-minded individuals and businesses! I’m particularly interested in partnering with interior designers who are passionate about creating spaces that blend functionality with natural beauty, and artists who share an appreciation for biophilic design and the power of nature in art. I believe that through collaboration, we can bring even more creativity and innovation to the projects we work on.
Whether you’re an interior designer looking to incorporate custom moss wall art into your projects, or an artist who wants to explore how natural elements can be integrated into a broader art practice, I’d love to connect and explore how we can work together.
