We recently connected with Robyn Ellis Kranz and have shared our conversation below.
Robyn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I have always loved writing, and I attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, earning a degree in Journalism. Working in the field in local news, then in networks, and eventually starting my own production company has allowed me to write for a living. And with Brownieland Pictures, I’ve been able to share the stories and the voices of nonprofits. This work has given me so much purpose. I am lucky to be able to combine my skillset with my purpose to give back to the world. As a company, we make it our mission to put our money where our mouth is and volunteer every month with a different nonprofit. This too, enables me to stay grounded in our work and really be able to tell authentic stories, because we can see firsthand the power of giving back.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
What brings me joy every day is knowing that the work Brownieland Pictures does helps others. Video production is changing and growing everyday, from technology upgrades to the creation of AI, and it’s an exciting time to be in the field. I truly believe that these enhancements will help us tell better stories if used in an altruistic way. The world of nonprofits is also changing. Organizations have to be more nimble and creative in how they tell their stories and we understand and connect to those challenges and opportunities. As a 30 plus year writer/producer, I feel I know my way around the written word. The connection that storytelling brings to nonprofits…whether it’s to encourage donors to give back, or increase enrollment at an independent school: what drives those actions, is the connection of storytelling. And that’s what Brownieland Pictures does best. We tell Stories For the Greater Good.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think writers need to be readers, first and foremost. To write is to love words and there’s no better way to love words and learn new words than to read. A lot. I have always loved reading and I think that has been the key to my success. I also think writers need a sense of curiosity about the world and the people in it. Having that sense of wonder about other people and their lives enables you to connect and relate so deeply. People know whether you care about what they are saying and that curiosity helps you to engage. Lastly, being a good listener makes you a better writer. Really tuning in to what people have to say and listening actively helps you learn more about not only the people who are speaking, but you and your place in the world you are observing. My advice to up and coming writers is to read and listen and care about what’s being said. Words have so much power. Use that power for good.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
One of the best parts of getting older is knowing what really matters. If I only had a decade to live, I would spend that time trying to see the world and learn about others. I would continue to give back to my community to make a difference, and I would spend as much time as I could with the people I love. Frankly, I do this every day now. Life is funny in that you have know idea what tomorrow will bring, so you don’t want to have regrets or fears. Live every day.
