Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robyn Scherer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Robyn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Besides Motherhood as my main focus/purpose to our three children, photography has always been a part of my life since I was about 8 years old. So, coming back into current day, it was around the time that our oldest began to drive that I felt the need to start working outside the home again. I have a Marketing degree and was a marketing director for years as I entered into motherhood. After our second child was born, we decided that I would stay home. So, as I said, about the time our oldest was about to begin driving I was feeling the pull to work outside the home again. It was around the beginning of 2014 that I decided to open a photography business. I have always had a camera in my hand to document our lives so it seemed like a natural progression. I even have photo scrapbooks going back 30+ years, completely up to date, documenting our lives. I think that diving into my passion for photography enabled me to fulfill my desire to give back not only to our family but to my community. The creative process brings me immense joy, and it is gratifying to see others also experience joy through the photographs I create and share with them.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been a professional photographer for 9+ years now. My focus is on high school seniors and creating senior portraits that is art worthy of showcasing in homes.
I am a Click Pro Elite, Unraveled Expert Artist and have also earned my Master of Senior Photography from NAPCP (National Association of Professional Child Photographers). I have had the honor of photographing 1200+ Seniors to date and am the official Senior Photographer at a local all girls high school in San Diego.
I have poured my heart into an online course, Mastering the Art of Senior Photography, that can be found on Udemy.com and Skillshare.com . I have put all that I have learned through education and my experiences into this course so that students have all they need in one place to grow in this niche or expand their current business.
Recently, I have ventured into the world of creative branding and marketing shoots. These sessions offer business owners the opportunity to amass a collection of branded images that can be utilized throughout the year for their marketing purposes.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In retrospect, three attributes were particularly influential in the success of my business: persistent efforts towards education and mastery of my art, consistent application of my acquired skills, and constant participation in competitions for awards and certifications, thereby garnering constructive criticism for refinement.
For photographers who are just starting out, I highly recommend taking classes every year in the areas you feel you need improvement, continue consistent practice of your new skills, and continue to repeat this process throughout the years ahead.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am presently seeking more opportunities in the realm of magazine work. Outside of photographing seniors and families, my passion also lies in the imaginative facets of marketing and branding, particularly with business owners. I have been featured twice in the Seaside Retailer and I am eager to delve deeper into creating a bank of images for other magazines for the projects they are working on.
Recently, I had the pleasure of working with Seaside Retailer and spotlighting two thriving coastal businesses. If my endeavors pique your interest, kindly contact me through phone or email.
