We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robyn Scott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robyn below.
Hi Robyn , really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
I decided I was tired of making the rich more rich. I have always been a successful manager and decided it was time to finally come something for myself.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve always been comfortable in the “spotlight.” From solo performances in middle school chorus, to Emceeing events with hundreds of attendees, to bombing on stage trying new stand-up material, I’m alive in the spotlight.
My chosen profession was business management. I specialize at team building and guiding the team to meet the set goals. As much as I hate buzz words and corporate speak, you’ll always hear me refer to my TEAM and LEADING vs bossing. Building a team also means I’m dedicated to my team, which also makes me fiercely protective of my team. That means watching corporations make decisions that are best for the corporation and clearly against the needs of its employees, and it causes me to no longer want to support that corporate entity. Amongst many other factors this is what led me to branch out into my own venture and open a coffee truck.
We rolled out The Caffeine Machine January 21, 2025. It took 2 months to build from a blank cargo trailer. With support from my wife, daughter, and closest friend/cousin we scrambled against limited daylight and 20⁰ weather to complete and launch this business.
Believe it or not, building the trailer wasn’t the hardest part. Creating a menu, signature beverages, deciding what to carry, etc is the most difficult part to getting it started… Well aside from booking events and finding profitable locations to set up.
With luck and perseverance this will continue to grow into an additional option for the people in our area. We’ve priced ourselves fairly and competitively. We don’t have many options that aren’t corporate and many are tired of those limited choices. My goal is to share my passion for these sweet and energetic beverages as well as grow this into it something that will continue generationally and allow us to support the causes that man so much to us.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Be prepared to make mistakes. While mistakes should not define you, they should educate you. I’ve made so many mistakes myself and I love mistakes made by others as a training tool. You’ll forget your little wins because you have those daily, you’ll probably remember those huge successes, but you never really forget when you screwed up. Make mistakes and learn from them.
Emotional intelligence will be your friend, if not your best friend. While difficult to maintain, remaining calm in stressful situations like bad employees, crazy customers, and the stress in general of any management situation will greatly help you navigate your choices with clear sight.
Therapy can be your friend and take your time off / PTO. While I have to hustle to get this business off the ground I’m still married and I still owe my wife of 25yrs time that isn’t work. We love to travel and spend actual time experiencing life together. Do not let your career run your home life.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
2024 was a very stressful year for me. Looking back I’m still not 100% sure where everything started to go downhill. My corporate job was becoming unbearable. Things were being made more difficult that didn’t need to be (aka corporate), numerous changes to how we did everything, numerous leadership changes, etc etc. I didn’t handle these changes in stress well. This led me to seek some help to figure out what was going on. Turns out, after having Covid in 2021 my high functioning ADHD has became low functioning ADHD. Also, apparently I’m on the spectrum which made the corporate changes of that caliber intensely stressful for me.
Stress would normally be something I could work my way through, but my new low function high intensity ADHD (thanks COVID) cause my impulse control to dimenish. This affected me as a leader. This made me a middle schooler trying to figure out how to handle my emotions. Overstimulation rage and severe lack of focus (especially during boring zoom meetings that should have been emails) contributed to my downfall. Finally late 2024, I was let go. Fortunately I was happy to leave and was already working on my coffee trailer.
