Meet Rodger D.

We recently connected with Rodger D. and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Rodger , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

or me, it all comes from the love of the art. Life is happening all around me, so anytime I get a chance to make music, it feels like a gift—a therapeutic release. I’m always pushing myself to grow, whether that means learning to edit videos, working with new engineers, or building with different producers. At the end of the day, I want to be the best at whatever I do, and that drive fuels my work ethic.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My name is Rodger D., and I’m an artist from Dallas, Texas. My music is inspired by life itself—the good, the bad, and the ugly. For me, music has always been an outlet, and after losing my father just over a year ago, it became the way I learned to vent and heal. My last album was centered on coping with his passing, with each song capturing a different emotion I went through. At the heart of my music is vulnerability. I want people to feel comfortable sharing their own stories, because we all have one worth telling.

Earlier this year, I dropped my album “Rooted on Greatness,” which feels like my true beginning in the music industry, even after nearly 20 years of making music. This project is my fresh start, a new chapter, and a statement of where I’m headed as an artist.

I’m also excited to announce that I’ll be performing live on October 24th in Arlington at Truth’s Serum Showroom, alongside my friends the BARNyartist. This show marks my return to the stage, and I couldn’t be more ready to share the moment with some amazing artists and the people who support us

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. Be Yourself
2. Experiment
3. Invest

Music is a long road, and it takes patience. Invest in yourself. Learn as much as you can, and network for what you can’t. The industry is crowded, so the only way to stand out is by being true to who you are and daring to be different. Confidence is important in hip hop, but nobody is above promotion. People won’t share your music just because it’s good—you have to show them why. Believe in your art and put your resources into it.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

Being well-rounded is key. Strengths are important and worth building on, but sometimes it’s the area of weakness that holds the missing piece to true success. The artists who make it often have different styles and unique factors that set them apart. The more baskets you have, the more chances you give yourself to win
