Meet Rodolfo Roman

We were lucky to catch up with Rodolfo Roman recently and have shared our conversation below.

Rodolfo , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I wasn’t the biggest or strongest, but playing football and wrestling in high school allowed me to build a thick skin. Also, when I worked in a local news station one of the reporters would be on top of me and calling me out in front of everyone. In a way, she was bullying others and myself. I would go home distraught, but I spun that negativity to make me better. Sure she was hell, but I thank her for her cruel words. It made me a better writer.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a sports journalist and commentator appearing weekly for Combate Global. Being a martial artist all of my life, it is a joy I get to work informing the public about this beautiful sport of mixed martial arts.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Dedication, discipline and consistency will get you to your goal. While in school, I worked several writing jobs for free so I can get the experience. I covered events I didn’t like but I remember my editor telling me the more you know the more valuable you’ll be.
Always have an open mind. Although it maybe dull or you may not be interested, learn it because you’ll never know what skill you’ll need to learn. For example, I am not a fan of editing videos but I forced myself to learn it. Knowing that skill open many doors.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My father would encourage me to read newspapers both in English and Spanish every single day. He took me to his radio station to learn the ropes. To this day, I continue to read multiple papers. Knowledge is everything.
