Meet Roger Lee

We were lucky to catch up with Roger Lee recently and have shared our conversation below.

Roger, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I found my purpose through prayer, soul searching, and self-awareness.

I define my purpose as the things that God put me on earth to do. I found my purpose by praying to God and asking Him what I was created to do, who I was created to be, and who I was created to serve. I did some soul searching to discover what I loved to do, what activities made me feel most alive, and what I am the best at doing. I became self-aware enough to know when I was operating in my calling and when I was not.

All of my prayers, soul searching, and self-awareness worked together to help me find and live my purpose.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am an arts entrepreneur, a multidisciplinary artist, and an artist career coach.

As an arts entrepreneur, I am the founder of Roger Lee Arts, LLC (est. 2012), an award-nominated arts business that produces dance, paintings, and artist career support and operates Roger Lee Dance Company (est. 2012). My award-nominated professional jazz dance company presented and headlined 23 of our own concert series and three of our own tours, performed for Grammy Award Nominated recording artists live on national television, and received national media coverage. I also launched and led my own mobile visual and performing arts studio through my arts business.

As a multidisciplinary artist, I paint, choreograph, and dance my own artistic works. I love spreading beauty and joy though my work as an artist.

As an artist career coach, I give visual and performing artists the clarity, encouragement, and accountability they need to achieve their own version of career success. I believe that when one artist wins, we all win. Each of our individual career successes collectively strengthens our creative industries. I love conducting private career coaching sessions for artists.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three things that impacted me journey the most were opportunity recognition, marketing, and networking. My opportunity recognition allowed me to see and create opportunities that were not always obvious. My marketing allowed me to define my own work and accurately articulate it to different target audiences. My networking helped me build strong professional relationships with industry leaders that were able to help me advance my career. These three areas are important.

I recommend that creatives build their opportunity recognition by developing a positive can-do mindset. Be brave enough to imagine the “impossible.” Take risks, create the opportunities that you want, and be the change you want to see in the world. If you don’t see what you want, maybe God is calling you to create that very thing. Bet on yourself! You can improve your marketing by answering these important questions: Who am I? What do I do? Who do I serve? Your answers become your brand and should be the focus of all your marketing efforts. You can network by meeting industry professionals, having conversations with them, and doing activities with them. Your network is your net worth. Invest in building strong professional relationships so that your career can grow and stand the test of time. I believe that opportunity recognition, marketing, and networking are the keys to sustainable career success for creatives.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am looking to partner with visual and performing artists in need of career support. I currently support artists in two ways: my Artist Marketing Kit and my Artist Career Coaching Program.

I create custom Artist Marketing Kits that include six marketing materials: a website, a reel, a booking ad, a logo, a bio, and a resume. I want to create more Artist Marketing Kits for more artists.

I run an Artist Career Coaching Program where I give artists the clarity, encouragement, and accountability they need to achieve their own version of career success. I conduct private career coaching sessions that are customized to address the artists’ specific career needs. I am looking to enroll more artists in my Artist Career Coaching Program.
