We were lucky to catch up with Roger Ma recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Roger with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in my family background, which is filled with entrepreneurs. The importance of diligence and consistency has always been emphasized in my upbringing. Life offers a multitude of approaches to achieving goals, and embracing every part of the journey is crucial. It’s common to focus on the less appealing aspects of work or business, overlooking our strengths. However, these challenging moments are what forge our resilience and discipline, essential for growth. My parents and relatives started with modest means, facing numerous challenges after immigrating in search of a better life. Their circumstances left them with no option but to uphold a strong work ethic. This wasn’t merely a choice but a necessity for advancement and improvement in their lives.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I lead a passionate team at Pet Zone Tropical Fish, dedicated to the aquascape and fishkeeping enthusiasts. Our presence in San Diego is marked by our two unique stores, distinguishing us as the city’s exclusive retailer focused on freshwater fish and aquascaping. We pride ourselves on being pioneers in the planted tank hobby locally, having opened our inaugural store in 2007. By 2016, we expanded with a second location in the vibrant Convoy District. Our commitment to the community is evident through our extensive engagement activities, including demonstrations, workshops, and hosting expert guest speakers. Pet Zone Tropical Fish has not only become an integral part of the San Diego aquarist community but also a must-visit destination for those passionate about aquascaping and fishkeeping from beyond the local area.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey with Pet Zone Tropical Fish, the three most impactful elements that contributed to our success were:
Networking with Local Fish Store (LFS) Owners: Building strong relationships with other LFS owners allowed us to share knowledge, challenges, and successes within the industry. This camaraderie facilitated a supportive community where we could learn from each other’s experiences, leading to mutual growth and development.
Engaging with Influencers within the Hobby: Collaborating with influencers in the aquascape and fishkeeping community helped us to expand our reach and credibility. These partnerships enabled us to tap into their followers, spreading awareness of our brand and the unique offerings of our stores. Influencers brought fresh perspectives and ideas, which kept our content and in-store experiences vibrant and appealing.
Constant Networking with Vendors and Building Partnerships: Maintaining strong, ongoing relationships with vendors was crucial for staying ahead of industry trends and ensuring access to the latest and best products for our customers. These partnerships often led to introductions with other key players in the market, opening up new opportunities for growth and collaboration.
Advice for Those Early in Their Journey:
Invest in Relationships: Begin by actively seeking connections with local business owners, influencers, and vendors in your field. Attend industry events, participate in forums, and use social media to reach out and engage with these key figures. Genuine relationships are built over time through trust, mutual respect, and shared goals.
Be Open to Learning and Sharing: Never underestimate the power of knowledge exchange. Be open to learning from others’ experiences and equally willing to share your own insights and successes. This reciprocal exchange fosters a strong community and can lead to unexpected opportunities and collaborations.
Focus on Quality Partnerships: Quality over quantity is essential when it comes to partnerships. Aim to build meaningful, long-term relationships with influencers, vendors, and other business owners who align with your brand’s values and vision. These partnerships should be mutually beneficial, where both parties can grow and thrive from the collaboration.
By focusing on these areas, individuals at the early stages of their journey can lay a strong foundation for success, fostering a supportive network that propels their business or hobby forward.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful contribution my parents made to my development was their holistic approach to nurturing my growth, encompassing travel, early business exposure, and a strong work ethic.
Firstly, by taking me traveling at a young age, they opened my eyes to diverse cultures, environments, and ways of life. This invaluable exposure broadened my horizons, fostered a deep sense of curiosity, and developed my ability to adapt to and respect various perspectives and situations. Traveling taught me lessons no classroom could, making me more open-minded and appreciative of the world’s vastness and diversity.
Secondly, introducing me to the world of business from an early age was a game-changer. Whether it was through simple discussions about their work, involving me in small business-related tasks, or encouraging me to think critically about how businesses operate, these experiences planted the seeds of entrepreneurial thinking. This early exposure demystified the business world for me, making it an accessible and intriguing field to explore and eventually pursue.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, my parents instilled in me a strong work ethic. They led by example, showing me the value of hard work, perseverance, and dedication. They taught me that success comes not from wishing for it but from working diligently towards your goals. This work ethic has been a guiding principle in my journey, driving me to pursue my passions relentlessly and overcome challenges with resilience.
The combination of these three elements – the love of travel, an early introduction to business, and a solid work ethic – has been instrumental in shaping who I am today. My advice to others would be to cherish and seek out varied experiences, never stop learning, and always be prepared to put in the hard work needed to achieve your dreams.
