We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Roger Steele a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Roger, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
When you contemplate the reasons behind why people don’t like you it becomes disarming. Most people are frustrated with their own personal situations (which is perfectly normal) but instead of reinvesting that energy to their craft or their pursuit they waste in on disliking you because it’s often easier than doing the work of becoming more self-aware or creating new processes to facilitate their development.
I’ve resolved that most people that don’t like you are for reasons that have very little to do with me, and more to do with those people. Alleviating myself from the negative thoughts and sentiments of others has become very important for my peace and my productivity.
What’s equally important to realize for myself is that the opportunities that are for me can’t be taken from me. Sometimes loose hate can slow those things down, but your real goal should be so shine so bright in your own right that there’s no denying who it’s meant for. But that can only happen by focusing on you and your process, not the opinions of others.
My truth is that it will be both impossible and fruitless to win the approval of everyone I come across. But I focus on giving the people I care about so many reasons to love me and the things I do that it suffocates all of the nay-sayer energy.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I advocate for the game of golf as not just a recreational hobby but as a lifestyle, and I’m blessed to work with a handful of brands who have joined me on this mission to make golf more cool. This game has an immense power to close social gaps and enable understanding between people from complete opposite ends of any spectrum.
I believe it to be the best game in the world and I’m looking forward to supporting people and brands that have impactful ideas on how to grow it.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Curiosity, Empathy. Collaboration. Honesty. It’s important to always be in persuit of knowledge and new information. It allows you limitless opportunities for growth. But also being able to understand people, be honest with yourself and others, and work through problems alongside one another makes everything in this world possible. I believe these things greatly enhance one’s professional and emotional intelligence and makes room for endless new opportunities.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Four Agreements. I read it often and refer to it regularly. The information has helped me immensely in my personal and professional endeavors and I hope everyone takes time to read it multiple times.
