We were lucky to catch up with Roleph Dubreus recently and have shared our conversation below.
Roleph, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I’ve learned by simply playing to my strengths and amplifying it while masking my weaknesses. I knew from the beginning of my childhood that I was very good at certain skills. I didn’t feel the need to try to be something I’m not or try to learn things that were conducive to innovating my set strengths. Although it may have been hard to form an identity, nobody could be able to determine my path but myself. Since they’ve never met anyone like me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a Hip/Hop Artist and a Film Director. I believe what’s most exciting about these professions is that I’m able to creatively make audible & visual content to entertain the masses. On top of that I can use the platforms of these mediums to positively influence others for the better. I have seen it go the other way though, where people have wanted to use these mediums as an agenda to negatively influence others for politics, social dynamics etc. My goal has nothing to do with that at all. I simply wish to tell great narrative stories through Film & Music that inspire people to do more for themselves.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three important skills for me were being adaptable, persistent, and always willing to be open minded to learn more to empower myself. It’s key to never let your ego get in the way of an opportunity or a business proposal. If you aren’t sure what the best decision is to make, seek guidance from a professional in that field to best advise you. There’s also no point in boasting how good you are either. If you truly are that good, it will show in your actions. These qualities have all led to me where I am today. There were many times where it was obvious I was the most informed/skilled within my field in many different rooms. Even though that was the case, I still came in humble and kept the focus on the reason of the event instead of myself. Thus making people like me & want to get to learn about me even further.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I take a day to myself. I don’t contact anyone, not my friends, family, anyone. I simply watch tv, play some games, workout, meditate etc. No matter how many things you have to get done, it won’t get completed within a day. You also only have a limited amount of energy to use every day. Even when Batman had a whole city to save, he may at times been up for 3 days straight, but even he has to rest from time to time. Once I return from that day off, I’m even more energized to work at even faster rate. So resting is essential in being the best you can be.
