We were lucky to catch up with Romaine Waite recently and have shared our conversation below.
Romaine , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
At first, I thought being effective meant adjusting or proving I belonged. Over time, I realized success in this industry comes from preparation and clarity. When you’re prepared and grounded in your choices, the work speaks for you. I learned to see my background and perspective as assets, not obstacles. Especially during the casting process. They don’t just need someone who fits they need specificity. Once I leaned into that, I walked into rooms more confidently and truthfully. Consistency and professionalism also matter. People remember how you show up. Staying rooted in who I am, my faith, discipline, and community helps me navigate spaces where I might be the outlier.
One thing to remember is that authenticity has real longevity in this business. When you commit to it, the rooms eventually expand, not because you forced it, but because the work made space.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an actor and storyteller, and over the years I’ve been lucky enough to work on a mix of film and TV projects. Everything from recurring roles on shows like The Mist and Departure to genre stuff on Star Trek: Discovery and a variety of films across Netflix, Peacock, Lifetime, and OWN. What I really enjoy is getting to play different kinds of characters whether it’s drama, mystery, or holiday films. That variety has really helped me grow both as an artist and a person. Right now, what’s really exciting is that I’m continuing my efforts as a producer and stepping into creative leadership with my new company Day 41 Films. It’s about more than just acting for me now. I want to help bring stories to life that really connect on an emotional level and reflect diverse experiences. Whether it’s feature films, series, or smaller passion projects, I’m focused on shaping stories that inspire and spark conversation.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three things that really stand out for me are resilience, being open to learning, and building genuine relationships. The industry can be full of ups and downs, so having the patience and strength to keep going is crucial. At the same time, staying curious and willing to grow whether it’s learning new skills or taking feedback helped me evolve as both an actor and storyteller. And maybe most importantly, forming real connections with people who believe in you and push you forward makes a huge difference.
For anyone early in their journey, I’d say don’t be afraid to fail or make mistakes it’s part of the process. Keep showing up even when it’s hard, and invest in building a community around you. Those relationships and that persistence will carry you through.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
If I knew I had just ten years left, I’d spend that time traveling as much as possible really getting to experience different cultures, meet new people, and see the world from fresh perspectives. Along the way, I’d want to dedicate a good part of that time to charity work or projects that give back, whether that’s supporting communities, helping with causes I care about, or using my skills to make a positive impact. To me, those experiences and connections would make the time feel meaningful.
