Rory, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by consistently asking myself and our team one simple question: How? In the back of my mind, there’s always this little voice chirping, How could we be better? That question branches into countless thought threads, connecting moments from our daily lives—especially surfing—back to our business. Surfing is full of inspiration, from the way a wave moves to the tools we use out in the water, and it always sparks new ideas. Some of those ideas are great, others not so much, but we stay open to all of them. It’s that constant curiosity and willingness to explore that fuels our creativity and keeps our brand evolving.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At SoCal Surf Rackz, we’re all about creating high-quality surf goods with a focus on surf storage, equipment protection, and organization. We’re passionate about building products that are not only functional and durable but also enhance the overall experience of owning and caring for surf gear. What sets us apart is our commitment to locally sourcing materials and handcrafting gear that lasts—right here in California.
What excites us most is the privilege of working with and for surfers of every kind, from weekend warriors to pro-level riders. We’re inspired every day by the vibrant energy of surf families and communities who share our love for the ocean and the lifestyle it represents.
What’s new from us? Stay tuned! We’re thrilled to roll out new freestanding rack designs, unique and functional surf accessories, and even collaborations with legendary names and brands in the surf industry. Our goal is to bring you the most trusted, tested, and high performance products in the market—gear that’s built by surfers, for surfers. It’s an exciting time, and we can’t wait to share what’s next!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
At SoCal Surf Rackz, three key qualities have driven our success: customizability, durability, and aesthetic appeal.
First, we empower our customers to customize every aspect of their rack to suit their specific needs and style. From selecting the perfect color to match their space, to choosing the size that fits their quiver, and adding functional accessories like wheels for mobility or hanging pegs for fins and backpacks, our racks are designed to be as unique as the surfers who use them. This level of personalization ensures that each rack is the most functional solution for its owner, which is always our ultimate goal. Mass production has never been apart of our game plan.
Second, durability has been a cornerstone of our brand. Our racks are built to last, designed to handle daily use without compromising their integrity. We use the highest-quality materials, hand-assemble each piece, and pay meticulous attention to detail to ensure they can stand the test of time. Whether indoors or outdoors, our racks hold up against the elements and the demands of an active lifestyle.
Third, we take immense pride in the aesthetic appeal of our racks. Each one is handmade by real people who care deeply about the craft. From premium, handpicked turf to meticulously sanded and stained wood, every rack exudes a polished, professional look. We have one piece of advice for aspiring business owners early in their own journey. Listen deeply to what your customers need and apply their input to your product as soon as you can. Then, don’t be afraid to giveaway some free samples of the end result. Incorporate any feedback you get – and then repeat the process.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
SoCal Surf Rackz is truly a product of our incredible leadership team and the amazing customers we serve. Each member of our leadership team plays a vital role, bringing unique skills to the table that have been instrumental in overcoming challenges and driving our success.
My role is to be the visionary. I focus on the big picture—the high-level mechanics of the business and the direction we’re heading as a brand. I keep us aligned with our mission while identifying opportunities for growth and improvement.
Rick, our carpenter, is the mastermind behind the physical production of every rack. With a rich background in real estate and building, he leads every aspect of crafting our racks with precision and care. His expertise ensures our products are not only durable but also expertly constructed to meet our high standards.
Brittney is our marketing genius. She has a skill that I like to call “the eye”—an innate ability to see and organize things in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing and perfectly aligned with our brand. Her creative vision and marketing strategies have elevated how we connect with our customers and share our story.
What makes our team special is that we rely on each other’s expertise when challenges arise. None of us has to know everything about everything—we’re a team, and we lean on one another’s strengths to come up with collective solutions.
And of course, we couldn’t have done this without our customers. They’ve been our greatest teachers, providing feedback that has guided us to improve and grow in the right direction. Their passion and support are the reason we do what we do, and we’re endlessly grateful for the role they’ve played in shaping our journey.
