We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rosa Alonzo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rosa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose through prayer. When I was in high school, I came across a book named “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren. From that moment on I started to see life a lot differently. I had to ask God through prayer, “what am I here on Earth for?” and only then did I find my true purpose. God set it in my heart from early on to feel empathy for those who have suffered or are suffering physically and emotionally.
I have always believed that from the moment we wake up and take that first look in the mirror can set the tone for the rest of your day. The energy that flows through our body can have a huge impact on us emotionally and physically. If we have experienced some type of trauma throughout our life it can manifest in many different ways; a few examples are pre-mature aging, skin inflammation, and even hyperpigmentation or lack thereof.
My purpose is to help people heal. With proper customized diet, meditation, breath work, and skin care guidance I am helping my clients understand what they are experiencing and give them the tools to get it under control and improve their overall lifestyle. My mission in life is to create a foundation where we can help assist victims of sex trafficking. This foundation would allow us to remove any branding they may have and help assist them in getting back into the world with their heads held high and to know that with God all things are possible.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Let me start off by saying that Slaying Skin is my passion! I am an intuitive facialist and I allow the skin to speak to me not vice versa. I was a Medical Aesthetician for about eight years before I really started to make the transition over to a more holistic approach. Over the years on the medical side of aesthetics I began to understand so much about the natural healing process that our body is capable of. I had to unlearn everything I had been taught to learn a more sustainable protocol to achieve optimal results.
During my time in the medical field of aesthetics I was trained by many different companies on their device protocols as well as trained by both Allergan and Galderma which are the leaders in injectables. I noticed that after a while Botox or Dysport stopped working for some. I then learned that by freezing the muscles we are actually creating muscle atrophy. As they say, “if you don’t use it, you lose it”. Just think of your arm in a cast for months without much movement, once the cast is removed you notice that the muscle has become thin and weak. Physical therapy is then recommended to regain the strength in the muscle again.
My current clientele demographic is focused towards fighting the signs of aging. I have put together an exceptional protocol which includes Microcurrent, Microneedling, Gua Sha, Facial Cupping and an exclusive Sculptural Facelift Technique to reverse and improve the signs of aging. These treatments allow me to not only repair the structure of the epidermis but repair the fascia, drain the lymphatic system and rebuild the structure of our facial muscles for a natural face lift.
The name Skin Slayer came from a client that was going through a series of Micro-needling treatments for acne scarring. The process can be kind of intense, but the results are phenomenal which hence the name Skin Slayer. My clients have a love hate relationship with Micro-needling but once completely healed the results are exceptional and they are always ready for another one.
What sets Skin Slayer apart is that we look at the skin from the inside out. Always seeking to get to the core root of a problem. We do not offer a mask in any of our services as we feel like masks and enzymes are some of the things that the client should be practicing regularly with their at-home regimen. At Skin Slayer our facials are anything but basic. We are always researching for the best for our clients, incorporating modalities that help improve the results we are trying to achieve, always keeping our clients educated on skin care products and the newest trends.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities that were most impactful in my journey of aesthetics has been an eagerness to learn, comfortable with being uncomfortable, and patience. The eagerness of learning and researching has helped me get to where I am today. Not only am I knowledgeable in medical aesthetics but I have been trained in Ayurveda which is a form of eastern Indian medicine. This year I plan on expanding into Traditional Chinese Medicine for a broader understanding of alternative medicine. On this journey we look forward to offering Acupuncture in the future for a complete wellness program and upgrade our face lifting technique through acupuncture.
Being comfortable with being uncomfortable has definitely been something that has played a huge role in the type of Esthetician that I am today. Many times, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone in order to grow and because of that I have been able to adapt to certain situations and overcome many obstacles. There were many services that my colleagues and I were terrified to try because just the thought of what if we did something wrong, we could potentially scar or hurt a client. Not taking that leap of faith meant that I would stay the same, and nothing grows in the comfort zone. Sometimes, in our field we are faced with some very harsh realities like the possibility of damaging someone’s skin by not listening to the right signs or asking the right questions. I pride myself in being in tuned with my client’s skin that I make sure to always ask great questions to better understand what their skin can and cannot handle.
For those who are early in their journey, the best advice I can give is to never stop learning, never be afraid to be uncomfortable, and kill negativity with kindness. In the rare instance of a dissatisfied customer, I hear them out to understand where they are coming from and ensure that they have felt heard. In most instances, by the end of the conversation they are booking an appointment to return. One thing I have learned over the years is that there is always room for improvement. Competition is everywhere but find what sets you apart from the rest. Always remember that we can’t be the best at everything so find what your niche is and fine tune it to perfection.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
The fact that I am so passionate about what I do I often find myself juggling many different ideas. Because I am so good and confident in my work, I throw myself into new projects very easily. A wise person once told me that all those ideas or projects that we try juggling all at once are like glass balls and when we start stretching ourselves thin, we can lose focus and drop the ball on what is really important. It’s always great to be well rounded but it’s wiser to find your strengths and go all in. Investing in your strengths will help set you apart from the rest.
