We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rosalinda Gonzalez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rosalinda below.
Rosalinda, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
When I was into astrology and new-age spiritualism I thought my resilience was some mystical timing meets primal drive to overcome my ancestral and family trauma. Last year I had a supernatural encounter with Jesus which healed me from a lot of trauma and bondage. That is when I realized my resilience came from God protecting me all these years in my hardship. Resilience was supernatural and not my ability it was Him having mercy on me till I came around to repent, accept Jesus as my Lord, and Savor and do a special work for him as a counter-culture artist.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am passionate about visual and multidisciplinary art. I spent many years working in museums and gallery in Houston and New York City. I am also known for paintings, videos, and photographs that express my life and spiritual experiences informed by trauma and Christianity. My work can be colorful and neo-expressionistic, monochromatic and abstract or take on a minimalist approach depending on the series. I love self-portraits and discovering a new perspective with my Nikon. I draw inspiration from God, Dada, and Fluxus when creating new media works or performing live. Visually my work often depicts self-portraits, figures, archetypes, and silhouettes.
I am currently working on a website and street fashion. I will be in two group shows this year with The Visual Arts Alliance and The Jung Center. When I am not busy working as an artist I am also involved in creating diversity in the arts in Houston’s Museum District, training my studio art dog named Miss Ivory Bones, and ministering to people on the streets.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The top three things that have helped me live a joyful, productive and healthy life as an artist is being teachable, loving your neighbor, and fearing God. My advice to people early in their journey as an artist is that it is never too late to to learn something new or to have a relationship with God.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am looking for spirit-led and spirit-filled collaborators of all disciplines for live performances: music, dance, fashion, video, set design and poetry.
