We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rose Bruno Bailey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rose, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
The Author Julia Cameron made a lasting impact on my writing journey. The Artist’s Way and The Right to Write are books I suggest if you struggle with inspiration and creativity. She says there is no writers block, only times when you are filled up and times when you are empty. If your creative well is empty, fill it up with inspiration. Go to the theater, museums and movies. Get inspired. Read beautiful books. As you are filling up your creativity life happens, people break up etc and then inspiration returns. This works for me. Inspiration comes in many forms, happy and sorrowful. I pay attention always.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an author/writer/poet/blogger born on the winter solstice. My background is in theater with an emphasis on dance. My work is published online and in print magazines. I am also an aspiring philanthropist. In 2020, I founded Letters From Uncle Louie, a Facebook group that sends letters to senior citizens in assisted living homes. Camellia in Snow is my first poetry book, and Maew’s Home Journey is my first children’s book. My former blog is mychangeforaten where I helped a charity with each ten pounds I lost. My latest project is the launch of my new blog www.juicejavajoy.com where I’m blogging about my one year self development challenge. I’m planning book events to raise money for local animal shelters. I’m in the process of a new podcast with my podcast partner here in Houston, and I’m writing a television script with a writing partner in London.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I listened when my best friend Melissa Bender recommendeded I write. I did just that and found what I loved to do, and practiced by writing without the thought of being published. That came later. I’m also a big believer in reading. Read everything you can get your hands on.
I also believe you can have more than one dream or goal. I did then and I do now. I’m always making lists and vision boards. I try to be of service to others as my mentors have been for me.
Make new friends, talk to new people, they will enrich your life. There are mentors everywhere. Be open minded and fearless. Life’s too short to hold yourself back.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m all about collaboration with like-minded individuals. Many of my projects are collaborations. I love writing for publications, and guest blogging for other blogs similar to my interests, particularly vegan blogs and lifestyle self development blogs. My Instagram inbox is open.
