Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to ROSECRANS EJAYE. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
ROSECRANS, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
1. Early Inspirations:
– Man, growing up, my moms was a pop locker in LA, and my pops was a Soul Train dancer. So, I was basically born into the entertainment game. We lived in Hawthorne, CA, and moms always had that Walkman with all kinds of tapes, from originals to bootlegs. Music was my world. Then we moved to the Antelope Valley, and I started hanging with the older crowd, getting into krumping and listening to J Squad. But life wasn’t all smooth—I ended up in foster care for being out with the older folks. When I got back to LA, I bounced around different schools, from the Westside to the Eastside. My freshman year at Crenshaw, the jerkin’ movement hit, and that’s when I really found my passion. Started producing jerkin’ music with some legends like Dijour D Boy from SOJ and Ghost from 357 SmashOff. By 11th grade, I got kicked out of all the schools in LAUSD and had to go to Job Corps in Utah, graduated early, then hit the streets solo. From fighting to jail and prison, music always pulled me back. In prison, I connected with a lot of upcoming LA rappers, like Saviii 3rd. After I got out, I went all in on music, but I was broke, so I ended up back in the streets. Made OG status but had my ups and downs. In 2022, I got shot in the head and survived—that’s when I knew I had a purpose.
2. Key Influences:
– Man, my first CD was G-Unit’s “Beg for Mercy,” and I wanted to be like 50 Cent. When I met my dad, he was around Shock G and Digital Underground, and he had his own clothing line, Thug Life. Being around him, I wanted to do my own thing too. My whole family was deep into music, from old school jams to West Coast classics. My uncle Shandozia made music, and my pops would tour with him. We had ties with folks like Dr. Dre, Snoop, Warren G—just being around that vibe made me want to go hard in the game.
3. Career Milestones:
– My first big move was realizing nobody around me was doing what I was doing—I was a pioneer. Labels offered me deals, but I knew my worth was way more. Doing shows, getting opportunities, I knew I had to keep going. Realizing my potential and seeing doors open, I knew I had to stay on my grind.
4. Challenges and Growth:
– Biggest challenges were getting excited for things that didn’t pan out. I lost friends, relationships, and trust because I wasn’t always transparent. But I kept pushing, learned from my setbacks, and kept going hard. Failures taught me where I needed to improve, and I saw successes in the mix too. It’s all about perspective—seeing the glass half full and pushing forward.
5. Personal Values:
– Every day I wake up with something to prove. I ain’t made it yet—once I got plaques on the wall, franchises, or can tour whenever, then maybe I’ll relax. Right now, I’m still hustling. I’m a free spirit, going with my heart. I know I need to prioritize more, but for now, I’m chasing what feels right.
6. Impact and Fulfillment:
– The best part of my work is the shows and connecting with people. Seeing folks relate to my music, from all backgrounds, shows me how powerful it is. Building a community and feeling the genuine energy—that’s what keeps me going.
7. Ongoing Evolution:
– My purpose has shifted from chasing trends to making history. It’s about leaving a legacy, inspiring future generations, and making real connections. It’s not just about being popular—it’s about real impact.
8. Advice Do what you love, what feels right. Ask yourself if you’ll regret not chasing your dream in 10 years. Be realistic—small goals can lead to big dreams. Don’t give up, even if it’s not on the biggest scale you imagined. Love what you do, and it’ll never feel like a job.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Aight, bet. Let me break it down for y’all.
I’m all about the music and entertainment hustle. Grew up with my moms being a pop locker and my pops a Soul Train dancer, so I got that rhythm in my veins. I produce, rap, and I’m deep in the LA music scene. My style’s a mix of everything I grew up on—krumping, jerkin’, old school West Coast vibes, you name it. What’s special about my work is it’s real—it’s my life story, my struggles, and my victories all wrapped in beats and lyrics.
Right now, I’m pushing my music hard. I got some new tracks dropping soon and planning to hit up some shows this summer. Just tryna build my name and make an impact. On top of that, I’m looking to launch my own clothing line, kinda inspired by what my pops did back in the day. It’s gonna be fresh, something unique that represents the grind and the culture.
And yo, if you in LA, look out for some events I’m putting together. Trying to bring the community together, showcase some local talent, and just vibe out. Follow my socials for updates, ‘cause it’s about to be lit.
So yeah, that’s me and my grind. It’s all about staying real, making moves, and leaving a legacy. Thanks for rocking with me. Stay tuned, ’cause I’m just getting started.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For sure, let me break it down:
1. **Resilience**: Man, you gotta be tough out here. Life throws mad curveballs, from getting kicked outta school to hitting rock bottom in jail. But you gotta bounce back every time. My advice? Never let setbacks keep you down. Learn from ‘em and keep pushing forward. Stay hungry and stay grinding.
2. **Networking**: Connections are everything. Being around legends and having folks in the industry to guide me was huge. So, for those starting out, build your network. Go to events, collab with other artists, and just put yourself out there. You never know who might open a door for you.
3. **Passion**: You gotta love what you do. For me, music was my escape and my purpose. If you ain’t passionate about your hustle, it’s gonna show. Find what sets your soul on fire and dive in deep. Practice your craft daily, stay curious, and always look to improve.
For those just starting, stay true to yourself. Keep your head up, surround yourself with the right people, and keep that fire burning. The journey ain’t easy, but it’s worth it if you stay focused and keep grinding.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
