We were lucky to catch up with Rosemarie Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rosemarie, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I developed confidence and self-esteem growing in a single parent household and a plus sized woman with four brothers. We didn’t have much. We made do with what we did have which was what we needed. Our wants for material things were mere wishes. There were times I had to wear my brothers’ clothes and only had ill-fitting shoes that left permanent physical scars. I had to develop thick skin to deal with bullies as youth and adults can be very unkind. I’d step into a room wearing tattered clothing as if I had on the most fabulous threads because I knew that my inner being kept me together more than my outer appearance. When I got my first job, I vowed to have whatever I wanted, which is probably why my clothes are running me out of my own house and I’m a shoeaholic. As a plus size woman, I’ve learned to ignore prolonged stares, whispers and being overlooked for certain opportunities. Someone will always have something to negative or positive to say, but it’s up to us to believe them or believe in ourselves. I wholeheartedly believe in ME!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a performing artist who has won awards as a poet and playwright, spoken word artist, singer/songwriter, actress, filmmaker and author of three self-published poetry collections, nice and naughty chapbooks dubbed One Single Rose®️. Stepping out on faith has provided numerous firsts in my artistic career. I am the first poet to be filmed in Motown’s infamous Studio A and the first Motown Mic Performance Artist of the Year. I’m also the first recipient of the Detroit Black Music Spoken Word Award and the first poet published under the Broadside-Lotus Press merger, two of the oldest African-American presses in the United States. I have performed nationally and internationally in a few amazing productions with notable performances including singing the National Anthem at Detroit Pistons, Motor City Cruise and Michigan Avengerz games, Motown Museum’s Tiny Porch, TMZ Live commentary cast member, SoFar Detroit, the Floacist’s Flovertex and Sidewalk Festivals of the Performing Arts in Detroit, MI, Kistrech Poetry Festival in Kisii and Nairobi, Kenya, Piton International Film Festival in St. Lucia, International Videopoetry Festival in Athens, Greece as well as a one-year tour in Europe. I am currently poet laureate for the Piton International Film Festival based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a featured artist and songwriter dubbed Queen Rose with Defected Records, the United Kingdom’s #1 house music record label. Find me streaming on all platforms as One Single Rose®️ or Queen Rose. I am currently writing the final installment of my Addiction play series scheduled for production in 2026 and am taking flyku stations on the road creating poems the old-fashioned way—on a 1955 Remington Riter typewriter. It’s always exciting to give youth who have never seen a typewriter history lessons as well as take seasoned adults back down memory lane. I am looking to expand my SpeakEZ domestic/sexual violence awareness campaigns into markets outside of the Midwest.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My pen name One Single Rose®️ speaks as to a woman who singly handles all of her artistic business. With collaboration attempts falling apart, I had to tap into what I already knew—the only person I can depend on is myself. The first impactful skill on my journey was organization. I try to stay on top of tasks and see them through from beginning to end knowing that I may have to complete every task at any given time regarding artistic offerings, but that’s o.k. This keeps me extremely busy and I hold myself accountable if anything happens to slip through the cracks. Multi-tasking is also a hard, yet necessary skill when running a one-woman show. It’s not impossible with appropriate planning and organization. I’m also not quick to jump at opportunities that don’t directly align with my core values. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Staying true to myself is making my artistic journey a peaceful one.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking to collaborate with individuals and organizations that look for something different (poetry, spoken word, flyku stations, etc.) in their artistic programming. I’d also like to expand the SpeakEZ awareness campaign throughout the nation. If there are any interested collaborators, I can be found on all socials as One Single Rose or visit www.onesinglerose.com and leave a comment with your contact information.
