Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roy Covington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Roy, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Confidence and self-esteem are both things that I innately had as a child but lost somewhere along the way to adulthood. Escaping the pressure of always trying to “fit in” by wearing something trendy or staying up to date on the newest slang was probably one of the most challenging things for me to do. Always wondering what others think of me instead of what I think of me. Who is Roy? What does Roy like to do? Now that I know that, I’m much more confident in myself and my capabilities. Nurturing my potential and trying different things, regardless of the outcome, is what’s helped my self-esteem as well. Because, at least I tried. When I failed, I failed loud, proud, and ready to try again. Honestly, saying it out loud, THAT is where my confidence came into real development because technically I did not fail because I learned something.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
“Hi, my name is Roy and my favorite color is purple,” is my go-to introductory phrase. I love it because the phrase is kind of goofy [like me] yet factual, but I’m an east coast Marine Corps veteran turned Los Angeles based singer-songwriter-producer. I started singing around six years old, played with the piano a little around 12, producing around 18, and recording original songs around 19. I use music as a form of expression. My songs are based from my own personal experience. Nobody knows me like me, right? My style of music explores heartbreak and intimacy; however, I’m excited to announce that I am working on a collection new music that will begin to release in 2025. I’m a huge advocate for mental health. I believe that your mental health is just as, if not more, important that your physical health. I’ve had my own mental health struggles, so I know what it feels like to think there is no one there for you. Plot twist: you’re wrong. There is always somebody.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Discipline, perseverance, and trusting myself were most definitely the most impactful things for me along my journey. To put it simply I got distracted… I was raised in the military household, vowed to never join, but ultimately joined. I went to college for one year and then I was in the Marine Corps for 13 years. While enlisted, I took the time to figure out what kind of sound I’d like to make, what kind of artist I wanted to be, and ultimately what kind of person I wanted to be. It wasn’t until I started going to therapy that I remembered the military isn’t what I wanted to do with my life. It’s important to remember that nobody’s process looks exactly the same. Stay the course. Make a plan and stick to it. Be you. I know it’s easier said than done, but it’s quite literally that easy.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Honestly, when I’m feeling overwhelmed, I remember that I just need to talk myself through my feelings. One things that I’ve noticed I do when I’m feeling overwhelmed is begin to start to talk to myself out loud. That’s what I know that I’m doing a little too much a little too fast or not enough with a short amount of time. So I go sit down, pop open the camera and I’ll video record myself talking. I will speak with purpose until I’m blue in the face. Literally, I’ll open the camera, I’ll say the day & time, and I’ll say the most present thing that’s on my mind. After that, I talk recant the events in reverse until I figure out what the root of the issue was. Once I find the root of the issue, I talk myself off that cliff and then I’m good again. That’s what I would recommend for anybody. Or just call one of your best friends.
