Meet Royce Monroe

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Royce Monroe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Royce, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic derives from my childhood in how I was raised. My mother always made it clear to me that I can do whatever I want to do in the future as long as I take it seriously and give it my all. Throughout life, I’ve seen the results of having a goal, executing a plan and receiving the results of those efforts. Once you begin to design your life versus survive in life, you can begin to understand the extent of your own power.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Being General Manager for a Major Label imprint such as Generation Now is a very exciting and ever evolving role in the music business. Being the centralized core for all things related to the brand, my job has me focus on ensuring the fluidity of information within the company from owner expectations to employee execution. Being a liaison with our distribution partner Atlantic Records, along with maintaining real foundational relationships with each of our artists. Representing the brand on all business related fronts to ensure continued operation and elevation of our business endeavors.

As we continue to grow and expand our label roster, please be on the lookout for our first R&B singer, Carvena. We’ve recently released her first single “Sleep In”, and we have more music dropping soon for her. Also, Kai Ca$h, another new signee that has built a foundation in the music industry thus far with his superior flow and social currency, you’ll be hearing from him sooner than later as well.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
So, Learn, Grow, Utilize. Learn the world of the business you’re working in. Grow that knowledge base by adding on to it, as it relates to understanding the entire ecosystem of your business. Utilize the knowledge and experiences to reach the goals you have set for yourself. Learning the different skill sets associated with your career path is key to understanding where you can fit into the big picture in order to reach your goals.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The 48 Laws of Power have been very impactful in my approach with navigating my career. Starting off, the first big lesson was never to outshine the master. Knowing your role allows you to focus on increasing the value of the role while not trying to come off as the boss, but as an asset to the boss in being a true leader. In business, everyone has someone to report to, or work with in regard to accomplishing a goal.

Next, understanding power in the process versus power in the result. You can not control both, you must either adapt to the process it takes to get what you want or be satisfied with the result you get based on what you’re willing to do, to get there. This is important in creating new opportunities for the goals you have set for yourself.

Another relates to providing the options that one has to choose from, when making a decision. He who creates or provides the options, ultimately controls the situation regardless of what final choice is made. This perspective aids in working as a team. When you provide the different avenues that could be chosen to resolve or address an issue, you also allow others to feel empowered by having them choose the final answer from the options you’ve provided.
