We were lucky to catch up with Ruben Carrillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ruben, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
From always feeling like an outsider. If you’ve always felt uncomfortable you get used to it. And that’s really all the worst that can happen from chasing after your dreams. If you don’t make it, you just feel a little uncomfortable for awhile until you can make a way to make it work. You have to pick your struggle. You can either be uncomfortable where you’re at. Or you can be uncomfortable trying to change your situation. One requires effort so most people don’t choose it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Recording Artist, Producer, Director, Film Editor & Graphic Designer based out of central Texas. Originally from Florida, I am a self taught musician who’s performed at some pretty large venues considering I’ve never took a music class. From everything to structuring and composing original songs to mixing and marketing my own music. All done independently.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First and foremost is being well versed with technology. Learning how to comfortably navigate basic and complex computer programs eventually led to being able to decipher the Digital Audio Workstations (DAW’s) I currently work with. They’re all pretty much the same thing when you break it down. If you can work with Photoshop you can edit videos. If you can edit videos you can edit music. They even use a lot of the same terminology. Second, would be developing my own taste musically. I have very eclectic taste. And I don’t buy into the hype of “legends”. I’ve always decided for myself what I’ve thought was good. When I find something I like I put it through a microscope and try to analyze what it is exactly I like about it. Being aware of that has been good to teach me different ways of going about putting together songs. There’s little vocal tricks to create a certain mood or songwriting techniques to get me out of writers block. Being able to break down the technical aspects of that and then adding myself into that mix has allowed me to stand out a bit more from my peers. Third would be knowing myself enough to know when I’m mimicking something else as opposed to being authentic. Got to be able to recognize that in yourself because it sticks out like a sore thumb when you’re not you. My advice? Learn everything you can about anything that interest you because you never know how that information can be useful in the long run.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m trying collaborate with any and everybody. I’m always up for a challenge. That’s the only way you can grow is by stepping out of your comfort zone. Producers, instrumentalists, rappers, singers. We can figure something out. Just add me on any social media @rhotheartist I’m also on YouTube if you search Rho The Artist I’ll pop up.
