We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ruby Joy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ruby below.

Ruby, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
My creativity is deeply rooted in several years of artistic exploration. During high school, I immersed myself in the arts, taking various painting and ceramics classes that equipped me with a diverse skill set. This exposure to different art forms shaped my perspective on creativity. I believe that having multiple outlets is essential for keeping my creativity alive, as they allow me to express myself in various ways. As a makeup artist, I strive to think outside the box and continually experiment with what excites me. I’m committed to pushing myself to try new things because I know that creativity thrives only when we embrace change and avoid stagnation.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hi, I’m Ruby Joy! I’m a Makeup Artist and Esthetician based in Kansas City, and I’m excited to share my journey with you.

My passion for makeup ignited when I was just 13, after receiving an eyeshadow palette for Christmas. What started as experimentation on myself evolved into doing prom makeup for friends in high school. After graduating, I realized that esthetics was my true calling and enrolled in esthetics school, where I discovered my love for skincare and helping others feel confident.

I thrive in creative environments, whether I’m on the set of a photoshoot or at a fashion show. I believe that experimentation is key to growth, and I constantly push myself out of my comfort zone to expand my skills. Makeup is such a versatile art form—it has the power to enhance beauty and elevate confidence.

Now, I’m thrilled to be starting my journey at Milagro Spa in Genesis Health Clubs. Every day is a new opportunity to learn and grow, and I can’t wait to see where this path takes me. I’m genuinely excited about the future and look forward to creating beautiful experiences for everyone I meet!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I initially overlooked the significant impact my background in art would have on my makeup skills, but I’ve since come to appreciate its transformative influence. My artistic training has sharpened my ability to see and understand colors and compositions in ways that directly enhance my work as a makeup artist.

Color theory, for instance, is an essential aspect of makeup artistry. It allows me to choose and blend shades that not only complement one another but also enhance the wearer’s natural features. My experience in painting has given me a deeper appreciation for the subtleties of color interactions, enabling me to create harmonious looks that are visually captivating.

In addition to color, my art background has provided me with valuable insights into shapes, shadows, and the interplay of positive and negative space. I’ve learned to perceive how light falls on the face, which helps me sculpt and define features with precision. Understanding these elements empowers me to create multidimensional looks that breathe life into every canvas I work on.

My background in art has equipped me with a level of precision in my hands that is essential in makeup application. The years spent honing my skills in painting and drawing have instilled in me a meticulousness that takes time and practice to develop.

This attention to detail translates seamlessly into my makeup work, where each technique requires careful consideration and execution. It allows me to create looks that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also tailored to enhance each client’s unique features.

My advice for those just starting out is to embrace new experiences and immerse yourself in different art forms. Experimentation is key—practice your craft consistently, as repetition builds muscle memory and confidence. Don’t hesitate to step outside your comfort zone; trying new techniques and styles will expand your skill set and creative vision. The more you challenge yourself, the more versatile and capable you become, opening up exciting possibilities in your artistry. Remember, growth often happens when you push your boundaries!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I absolutely love collaborating with photographers, models, designers, and stylists. I’m open to all kinds of projects because I believe that when creative minds come together with a shared vision, something truly beautiful emerges. Each collaboration brings its own unique energy and perspective, allowing us to explore new ideas and push the boundaries of our art.

Working alongside other talented individuals not only inspires me but also challenges me to think outside the box. I enjoy the process of brainstorming concepts, experimenting with different styles, and finding innovative ways to bring our collective vision to life. Whether it’s a photoshoot, a fashion show, or an artistic project, the synergy that develops in these partnerships is incredibly rewarding.

Every collaboration is an opportunity for growth, where we can learn from one another and create something that resonates on multiple levels. The result is often a dynamic blend of creativity that showcases the strengths of each contributor. I find it exhilarating to be part of a process that celebrates individuality while producing art that speaks to a wider audience. In essence, these collaborative experiences are not just about creating; they’re about building connections and crafting unforgettable moments together.
