Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruby Joy Ketchum. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Ruby Joy, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I do pride myself in my work ethic. I feel fully and truly stable in my work and my process when I’m fully prepared. and by thinking of acting as you could never be prepared enough. There will always be something new to discover! More research, a song to listen to, a book to read, people to talk to to inform the performance. With that I also view my work ethic as a helpful tool for me; often times it’s easy to get into your head about whether or not your acting is “good”, which is so silly but can really hold you back in your performance. All of the cheesy advice is worth listening to; when you let go and trust the work you’ve done, you can let go and trust the performance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an actor, musician and model. Kind of makes me laugh typing it out, sounding like the cliche NYC artist gal, but it’s true and I love getting to say it! Also just reminded me of that one Fall Out Boy song where I think the title means “waitress, actress, model, singer”. Well, hi.
I”m so grateful for the life I’ve cultivated in Manhattan. I moved here from Nashville. Tennessee to study acting – my first rime acting at all. My favorite thing about what I do is always be working on new projects and collaborating with new people. I aim to always keep busy in my creativity.
My favorite project I was apart of in 2024 was the stage play God Mode, written by Quinn DeVillers and directed by Annalisa Noel. It was a new play about 6 non-male characters uniting in the women’s bathroom at a dive bar and witnessing something godly. I was so happy during that process, as it was a piece of media that I think is so relevant to the time, being set in party culture with multiple spiritual views and types of people.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Hmmm. For acting, these are the three aspects that have kept me grounded and growing.
Always being open, meeting and working with the energy in the room, shining without the desire of being seen.
The last is my favorite quote, I found it once and wish I knew where it came from. “Shine without the desire of being seen”. With acting, you NEED to let go of what others think of you, how they view you or how they perceive your performance. Being bold, making choices, bringing your magic to the work, but without the desire or care of what others think of it.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
One of my very favorite books is The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. There are quotes from that book I have highlighted and applied to my acting.
“Chaos is more freedom; in fact, total freedom. I want to be free to act, and I also want my actions to mean something.”
“Love the world and yourself in it, move through it as though it offers no resistance, as though the world is your natural element.”
“The compelling thing about making art – or making anything, I suppose – is the moment when the vaporous, insubstantial idea becomes a solid there, a thing, a substance in a world of substances.”
