Meet Ruby Outlaw

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruby Outlaw. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ruby, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
As a young girl, being raised by my grandparents, I watched them pour and sow into their churches, communities and to those in need in whatever way they could help. Whether it be with time, resources, knowledge, or monetary contributions, they were always giving in some capacity. I saw them act with so much kindness, integrity, and love towards all men. Being that my foundation is founded upon Christian principles of giving and sowing…generosity became a normal practice. It was always instilled in me to treat the custodian with the same respect as I would treat a CEO. At any given point in our lives, we could be the one in need.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have always had an unwavering love for the creative arts; whether it be music, photography, painting, fashion, etc. After having numerous experiences within multiple areas of creativity, my desire to create businesses that not only allowed me to flourish, but to also make room to house other creatives to operate freely in their gifts was sparked. In 2012 I made the hard decision to leave corporate companies and pursue entrepreneurship. With my continued love and passion for the beauty industry, I birthed several creative ventures to include; RubyReddCheeks Boutique (expertly curated vintage), The Haven Salon & Beauty Bar (full service hair salon), The Haven Brow Lounge (a full service esthethics spa), Bridal by The Haven (Concierge Bridal Hair & Makeup services), The Haven University (continued education for beauty professionals), and Oasis Luxury Haircare (botanical infused hair care products).

Each business fueled by the ever present need for greater access to mentorship and education in the hair, makeup, and fashion industry. No doubt, being solely reliant on the growth of your business has posed many challenges, however, it created an unshakeable work ethic that challenged me to show up consistently and persistently for myself and my business.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important qualities one must possess in my opinion are: discipline, consistency, being teachable. Many days Im not motivated because Im human and real life experiences can demotivate you, however thats where your discipline should overshadow how you “feel” in the moment to keep you striving towards your goal. To me consistency can fall right in line with discipline because, you cant just show up for yourself or your business for 1 week and expect a great return of that 1 week invested. You have to make a continual effort daily to be your best self and give as close to 100% that you can. Consistency will always yield a return. Lastly, remaining humble and teachable with an open mind. As soon as we neglect knowledge, we have failed ourselves and stunted our own growth.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
As I mentioned earlier, I was raised in a Christian household, so for me the Bible is my all time favorite read. It has helped me navigate some of my toughest times, helped balance my behaviors, and centered me to remember that life is but a vapor. We need not spend our time focusing on our problems, or shortcomings, but that our greater focus should be on glorifying God with our lives and by how many people we can impact with love. My favorite books within the Bible are Proverbs, which is the book of wisdom and character development…and Psalms, which is a book of praise to God for who He is.
