RUDY, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Resilience comes from having a clear and meaningful purpose. For me, it all started when I first got my real estate license in 2007. My goal was simple yet powerful: I wanted to retire my wife from her job, travel the world with my family, and enjoy life without worrying about the price on the menu.
Growing up, I was in a family where money was rarely discussed. The subject of money, business, salesmanship, or entrepreneurship was almost taboo. I was told things like “money doesn’t grow on trees” and “you have to save money.” I watched my family save coupons for groceries, living in a mindset of scarcity.
When I got married and started my own family, and when I began my real estate sales business in 2007, I knew I didn’t want to continue in that scarcity environment. I wanted to create a life of abundance and opportunity. Knowing my “why”—what truly mattered to me—gave me the drive to push through challenges. When your goals are real and meaningful, they fuel your resilience and keep you going, no matter what obstacles come your way.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities stand out as the most impactful in my journey: sales, communication, and leadership.
Sales: My career began as a door-to-door salesman, and those early experiences taught me the fundamentals of selling—understanding people’s needs, building trust, and offering solutions. Sales is more than just closing deals; it’s about creating value for others. To anyone early in their journey, I’d recommend immersing yourself in every opportunity to learn the art of sales. Whether it’s through direct selling experiences or structured training, mastering sales skills will be a cornerstone of your success.
Communication: Effective communication is key in every aspect of life, especially in business. I realized the importance of communication early on and made it a priority to develop this skill. Whether it’s speaking with clients, negotiating deals, or leading a team, clear and empathetic communication builds connections and drives results. For those just starting, focus on honing your communication skills. Practice active listening, learn to articulate your ideas clearly, and never underestimate the power of a genuine conversation.
Leadership: Leadership is about more than managing others; it’s about inspiring and guiding people towards a common goal. My journey in leadership began when I joined a network marketing sales team—not for the money, but for the training. I never missed a session because I knew the value of what I was learning. Those experiences taught me how to lead by example, motivate others, and cultivate a vision. For anyone looking to develop their leadership skills, I’d advise seeking out opportunities to lead, even in small ways. Leadership is a skill that grows with experience, so embrace every chance to step up and take the lead.
My advice for those early in their journey is simple: invest in your growth. Seek out training, surround yourself with mentors, and be intentional about developing these three key skills. Sales, communication, and leadership are not just business skills—they are life skills that will serve you in every aspect of your career and beyond.
