Ruihong, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
To sustain my creativity, I prioritize a few key practices. Maintain a persistent curiosity by engaging with diverse fields and individuals. Drawing profound inspiration from film, literature, and music, I seamlessly integrate their emotional depth into my work. Cultivating my imagination through immersion in creative works and meticulous observation, and allow my instincts to guide me in crafting narratives that blend reality and imagination seamlessly.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a fashion designer, documentary photographer, and poet, my primary focus lies in the art of documentation. I explore the fragility and significance of memories within my work. Having graduated from School of the Art Institute of Chicago, my creations are characterized by their soft and intimate qualities, providing a space for contemplation and connection while preserving precious memories. At the core of my artistic expression is the belief that memories are the eternal threads weaving my essence, creating the very tapestry of my existence. They resemble delicate petals of a fragile flower, vulnerable to the whims of external influences that may cast shadows upon their integrity. Within the realm of this ordinary existence, I discover a treasure to cherish. Within the confines of my mind, I perceive my work as the boudoir of my memories, my innermost sanctuary, and the reflection of my soul.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For those beginning to their journey, it’s crucial to stay active in learning, maintain an open attitude towards personal growth, and pursue interests diligently. Seek support from like-minded individuals who understand your perspective, as they can aid in shifting negative thinking patterns and exchanging positive thoughts, potentially guiding towards new directions. Jobs with a social aspect hold particular significance, and attending industry events offers opportunities for work, collaborations, and valuable idea exchanges.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
As a fashion designer, I am eager to explore various skills related to clothing and incorporate them into my designs. My personal challenge has been transitioning from self-teaching to mastering new skills and transforming them into my own artistic language. A lover of craftsmanship, I find solace and depth in the tranquility that needles bring. I view craftsmanship as a journey of growth and meditation. One of my recent major challenges has been learning beadwork from scratch, transforming flat beads into intricate three-dimensional shapes. This transformation of shape gives me a sense of rejuvenation and a feeling of breathing new life into each piece.
