Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Russ Hosmer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Russ, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
My self-discipline stems from a lifetime of experiences that have shaped and tested my resolve. As a former athlete, national champion, and world-class competitive bodybuilder, I learned early on that success is not a matter of chance — it’s the result of consistent effort, focus, and unwavering commitment. These early lessons in discipline laid the foundation for everything that followed.
Of course, my time as a United States Marine Corps veteran took that discipline to an entirely new level. The rigorous training and the mental toughness instilled in me during my service honed my ability to push through adversity, stay focused on my objectives, and maintain a sense of purpose no matter the challenges. The Marine Corps not only sharpened my physical endurance but also taught me the power of structure and routine in achieving excellence.
Now, as a professional, certified life coach and performance strategist, I channel that same discipline into everything I do. It is this self-discipline that helped me establish Constant Progression™ — the coaching platform I founded to help professionals break free from burnout, build resilience, and achieve lasting personal growth. It’s this deep-rooted discipline that has been critical in shaping my approach as a coach and strategist, allowing me to serve my clients with efficiency and clarity, while helping them develop their own sense of ownership and structure in their personal and professional lives.
Self-discipline is the backbone of progress, and it’s been my greatest asset in both my personal journey and in guiding others on theirs. Through Constant Progression™, I strive to empower others to tap into their own discipline, not as a rigid set of rules, but as the inner strength that drives meaningful, lasting transformation.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Constant Progression™ is the culmination of a journey rooted in my commitment to mental health, personal growth, and the belief that we all have the power to live purposeful, fulfilling lives. My journey to founding Constant Progression™ has been shaped by over 25 years of personal and professional experience, including my time as a national champion bodybuilder, a US Marine, and now as a certified life coach and performance strategist. Throughout my life, I’ve seen firsthand how mental health can either empower or hinder individuals, especially in high-pressure environments like the military and first responder communities. That’s why, today, I am passionate about raising awareness around mental health and offering practical tools and strategies to help people heal and manage it.
At Constant Progression™, our mission is simple but powerful: to help professional adults break free from overwhelm, build resilience, and ultimately thrive in their personal and professional lives. Through our coaching programs, we offer evidence-based techniques in mindset mastery, habit-building, fitness, and mental clarity — empowering our clients to overcome self-doubt and align with their purpose. What excites me most about Constant Progression™ is the impact we’re making by providing people with a roadmap to self-discovery and lasting transformation.
A key focus of my work right now is the launch of our **PTSD Recovery & Resilience Initiative**, a program specifically designed for veterans and first responders who struggle with the severe effects of PTSD. This initiative is incredibly close to my heart, as I have witnessed the toll that PTSD takes on these brave individuals who selflessly serve our communities. Our goal is to bring this program nationwide, providing a comprehensive support system to help them heal, regain their mental clarity, and rediscover their sense of purpose.
In addition to my work with Constant Progression™, I’m also available for public speaking and keynote events, where I share my insights on topics such as **Mindset Mastery for Peak Performance** and **Resilience: Turning Stress into Strength**. I’ve seen the power that a well-timed speech or seminar can have in inspiring a transformation, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to speak on such impactful topics.
As I look to the future, my focus remains on growing Constant Progression™ into a global life coaching platform that reaches professionals everywhere, especially those in high-stress roles like first responders, veterans, and corporate leaders. By continuing to offer world-class coaching and expanding our initiatives, we aim to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most. We are just getting started, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, there are three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been absolutely crucial in shaping my path: **discipline**, **resilience**, and **emotional intelligence**. These three pillars have not only shaped my personal growth but also laid the foundation for the work I do today through Constant Progression™.
First and foremost, **discipline** has been the cornerstone of my success. Whether it was in the gym as a competitive bodybuilder, in the rigorous training as a US Marine, or in building my business, discipline has always been the driving force behind my ability to stay consistent, focus on long-term goals, and push through adversity. My advice to anyone starting out is to embrace discipline from the very beginning. Set clear goals, create a structured plan, and stick to it even when motivation fades. Discipline will always carry you through when motivation isn’t enough.
Secondly, **resilience** has played a vital role in navigating the inevitable challenges that come with any journey. Life has a way of testing your resolve, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt, and keep moving forward is critical. Resilience is something that can be developed over time by viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth rather than as roadblocks. My advice is to cultivate a mindset where every challenge is a lesson. When things get tough, lean into it, learn from it, and use it as fuel to push forward.
Finally, **emotional intelligence** — the ability to understand, manage, and channel emotions effectively — has been a game-changer in both my personal life and professional endeavors. It’s essential not only for managing your own emotions but also for connecting with others, leading effectively, and understanding the unique needs of the people you work with. For those early in their journey, I would recommend actively working on developing this skill by practicing self-awareness and empathy. Take the time to listen, understand your own emotional responses, and how they impact your decisions and interactions.
For those starting their own journeys, my advice is simple: Focus on building these three foundational pillars early on. The road may be difficult at times, but with discipline to stay the course, resilience to handle the setbacks, and emotional intelligence to navigate both your internal world and external relationships, you’ll be equipped to build a strong and lasting foundation for success. Stay committed to growth, and remember that every step, no matter how small, is progress.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
This is a question that I deeply resonate with, and it’s something I coach on regularly within Constant Progression™. My belief is that, while it’s important to acknowledge and develop our areas of weakness, the most powerful path to success comes from doubling down on our **strengths**. Here’s why:
When we focus on our strengths, we’re tapping into the skills and talents that we naturally excel at, and more importantly, that bring us fulfillment and motivation. These are the areas where we can achieve the highest level of performance, where we feel most confident, and where we can make the biggest impact. Strengths are like fuel for the fire — they give us the energy and drive to push through obstacles, and they naturally align with our sense of purpose.
That being said, I’m not advocating for ignoring areas of weakness completely. It’s important to develop **a baseline level of competence** in areas that are necessary for us to function effectively in the world. However, when we try to improve areas where we are naturally weak, it often feels like swimming upstream. We put in a tremendous amount of effort, and the results can sometimes be underwhelming, leaving us frustrated and drained.
A great example of this philosophy in action comes from my own experience as a competitive bodybuilder. Early in my career, I focused relentlessly on improving my strengths — particularly in areas like conditioning and physique development, where I was already excelling. I didn’t shy away from working on weaknesses like flexibility or agility, but I prioritized my strengths. As a result, I was able to achieve national championship titles because I leveraged the aspects of my training that I naturally excelled in.
In business, this principle is equally relevant. When I started Constant Progression™, I made a conscious decision to focus on the strengths that had shaped my career — mindset mastery, habit-building, and high-performance strategies. These areas aligned with my personal experiences, values, and passions. Yes, I had to develop my skills in certain areas of business, like marketing and technology, but I didn’t allow them to distract me from the heart of my business. By continuing to hone my strengths, I’ve been able to create a powerful and authentic coaching platform that resonates with clients and drives meaningful transformation.
So, in short, my advice to anyone on their journey is to go **all in** on your strengths. Develop them to their fullest potential and build a career or life around what you do best. Yes, improve your weaknesses where necessary, but remember: mastery comes from refining your innate talents, not from trying to be everything to everyone. By doing so, you’ll not only achieve extraordinary results, but you’ll also experience a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose.
