We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Russ Kessler Jr. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Russ, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I heard this short saying, “If it’s too be, then it’s up to me!” Nothing of value or that lasts is built on halfway strength or efforts. My motto is Determined To Be Better! And it’s that mindset daily that pushes me to be not just my best, the best for my family and those around me. You putting in the work is what gives you the pride and yes, discipline to do what you love. My dad always told me that if am going to do something, then do it right. If you want it, then do what’s necessary to get it…be disciplined enough to go after it, no matter what!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was always active growing up with sports and hunting; yet when I joined the Marines, fitness became more of a passion. Coming along someone in their journey to become more healthy and more fit was where I get my joy. So starting V2fit was all about giving back. We are a faith based, non-profit business where we focus more on victories than dollar signs. An awesome give back is when I am able to train the SRT team for Garner PD. Training the men and women to be their very best is what it’s all about. Our motto, “Determined To Be Better!” is you showing up each time and being better than the last time. Whether 1 on 1, small group or bootcamp style, I give 100% to those I train. Their victory becomes my victory.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I will use the 3 D’s Desire: this must be a burning passion that its a must in your life.
Discipline: you choosing what you want the most rather than simple pleasure now.
Determination: a mindset that doesn’t let anything deter you from achieving your goal.
And it’s as simple as this: “you don’t have to know everything, just know how to get everything done.”
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Ever since I can remember, my parents were always supportive of my activities in sports. Having parents who believe in you and love you can’t be bought. The number 1 thing is that they lived a godly life that has shown me that without God, nothing else matters. And whatever you do, do it right.
