Meet Ruth Medrano

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ruth Medrano. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ruth below.

Ruth, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I’ve always had a decent amount of confidence and moderate self-esteem. I think my parents instilled in us that my sisters and I could be strong women and do whatever we wanted. I’m sure most of it starts there. Even when we failed or fell down my parents would encourage us to “Get back on the bike” or “Keep trying on the swing”. It’s those moments where you learn that one: you can do it, and two: it’s takes a little more work. I’ve very much brought those concepts into my adult life and professional life as a make up artist. Most of us have raw talent, but it takes many years of practice and hard work, and knowing internally that if they can do it, you can do it and that most things, once you figure them out, are actually quite easy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been a professional Makeup Artist and Hairstylist since 2011. When I first moved to Los Angeles I wanted to work on movies! Character makeup was the name of my game and I wanted to continue my schooling in LA. When I got here and started working and supporting myself though, I didn’t make enough to put myself through the makeup school I wanted, so I just started working. I would network with friends and colleagues. Through word of mouth and Craigslist I would find a project here and there. Since that point, I’ve moved into the realm of Beauty makeup, and this is where I find my career “happy place”! These days I specialize in events (all events) and commercial work. Some of my favorite things in my work: Being able to travel to different parts of the city, state, sometimes country and different countries!! I love when everything comes together; Makeup, Hair, outfit, accessories, that’s the magic moment!! And I love the variety of my work; going from a red carpet to a birthday party, to a big brand commercial, to a photoshoot!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Persistence is the first one. I call Persistence one of my superpowers. Being willing to practice always. For me I love to have models over for a quick glam, be a part of test shoots, and practice on my mannequin head. And being kind and friendly to the core.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal clients are ladies who are confident in themselves. It doesn’t mean their always sparkling, but they know their self-worth and work hard at what they do. They are kind and love to look their best in almost every situation.
