Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruthie Larbi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ruthie, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
Thank you so much for having me! Taking risks has always been a part of who I am. I studied music in University, which is a risk in itself. However, I knew it was what I loved and I could see myself in this field forever.
Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that I take more risks with every passing day because of numerous situations that have recently occurred in my life – from the sudden, unexpected death of my cousin, to being in a car accident, having food poisoning and going through other various circumstances.
It has felt like I’ve been taking hit after hit. But these situations have reminded me that my time on earth is short. Life in itself is a vapour; it’s here today and gone the next. That is what lights a fire inside of me to take risks because I know I won’t live forever on this earth. At the end of my life, I want to be able to say that I lived with no regrets and held no part of myself back because of fear of the unknown or what other people thought about me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a Christian pop/R&B artist and songwriter from Ontario, Canada. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been passionate about music in some way, shape or form. In 2020, I joined the Kingdom Music Academy, a program that teaches all about songwriting, artistry and releasing music. This was when I intentionally began my journey and I haven’t looked back since! I combine this passion with my faith in order to create music that is uplifting, reflective and inspirational. On April 19th, I released my very first music video called “In Every Way (feat. Clint Campbell)”, which is available on YouTube and the song can be streamed on all major platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc.). I also plan on releasing a few more songs later this year; follow me on Spotify so you don’t miss a release!
Additionally, I’m a keynote speaker that combines inspirational stories with music. I’ve been loving the creativity of crafting a keynote and presenting it to various audiences. I started my speaking journey just over a year ago and it’s been a blast! If you know me, you know I love to speak AND sing so this is the perfect combination for me.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
- Believing in God AND myself – My faith in God plays a vital role in my life. I know He’s the one that gives me the breath in my lungs and my purpose here on earth. God is the one who has deposited these gifts and talents within me and it’s my job to cultivate them. God believed in me, but I didn’t believe in me. I let the gifts and talents sit dormant because I didn’t truly believe they would make a difference in this world. But when numerous opportunities started coming my way, I began to believe in myself and my abilities again. Now, I know I can make a significant and eternal impact, even if it’s just on one life.
- Receiving mentorship – I’ve loved writing, recording and releasing music, however, I didn’t initially know how to do it on my own. Being a part of the Kingdom Music Academy allowed me to learn from mentors that have already been through the process; starting from one idea on a voice memo to having a complete song professionally produced and available for anyone in the world to listen to. I also have mentors and coaches for my voice and keynote speaking to help me improve in those areas as well.
- Being teachable – “Never stop learning!” That is one of my favourite quotes. I’ve absorbed a lot of information in the past few years, however, I never claim to know everything because there is so much I’m still learning. Yes, I’m a talker, but now, I’ve learned to take a back seat and listen to what others are saying, whether it be mentors, coaches, accountability groups, friends, etc. Every time I’m in a 1-on-1 meeting or a group session, I always learn something new or see things from another perspective that I didn’t previously notice.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I believe in having a healthy balance of going all in on your strengths, as well as leaving room for improvement in weaker areas of life. I’m a prime example of this! I studied music in university, but my degree wasn’t in singing or songwriting; I played classical flute. I was a strong instrumentalist but didn’t really use my singing voice. The flute became my voice for nearly a decade. However, when I started to sing again, my voice wasn’t as strong as I wanted it to be. I went to a vocal coach to help improve my voice and technique. Let me tell you, that helped me tremendously! I’m so glad I took the time to invest in my voice because of the singing opportunities I have currently.
