We recently connected with Ruthie Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Ruthie, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
For years, I struggled through a rough and abusive marriage, feeling lost and uncertain about my future. When I finally found the strength to leave, I faced the daunting road of rebuilding my life. I was blessed to remarry an amazing man who showed me what love and support truly meant. Through all the ups and downs, I worked in several different fields, searching for where I truly belonged. Then, after an injury at work forced me to step away from traditional jobs, I was faced with a crossroads—one that ultimately led me to my true calling.
Crocheting and crafting had been a part of my life since I was a young child, a skill that brought comfort and joy even in the hardest of times. With encouragement from those around me, I decided to turn my lifelong passion into something more. I opened Teal Dragonfly Creations, a place where I could not only sell fiber arts supplies but also create a welcoming community. Teaching others to crochet, knit, and do macramé became more than just a job—it became a mission to bring people together, to share creativity, and to offer a space where anyone could find peace in the art of making.
Fiber arts are more than just crafts; they are therapeutic in ways many don’t realize. They offer a sense of accomplishment, help ease stress and anxiety, and even improve physical dexterity. I’ve witnessed firsthand how learning to crochet or knit can provide healing, whether someone is struggling with mental health, chronic pain, or simply the weight of daily life. Through my store and classes, I’ve found my true purpose: fostering connection, inspiring creativity, and helping others discover the joy and healing power of fiber arts.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At Teal Dragonfly Creations, I do more than just sell yarn and fiber arts supplies—I create a space where creativity and community thrive. I teach people how to crochet, knit, and do macramé, guiding them from beginner stitches to advanced techniques. Whether it’s a private lesson, a group workshop, or simply offering advice to someone choosing their next project, my goal is to help others discover the joy and fulfillment of fiber arts. Beyond teaching, I design patterns, curate high-quality yarns, and foster a welcoming environment where everyone, regardless of skill level, feels encouraged to create.
What makes my store truly special is the sense of belonging that comes with it. Fiber arts have a unique way of bringing people together, and Teal Dragonfly Creations is more than just a business—it’s a community. Whether someone walks in to learn a new skill, share their latest project, or just enjoy a warm, creative atmosphere, they find a place where they are supported and inspired. There’s something magical about watching someone pick up a hook or needles for the first time and seeing their confidence grow as they create something beautiful with their own hands. That transformation, that joy, is what makes this work so exciting.
My brand, Teal Dragonfly Creations, represents resilience, creativity, and connection. The teal dragonfly itself is a symbol of change, strength, and the beauty of transformation—values that reflect my own journey and the journey I hope to inspire in others. I believe fiber arts have the power to heal, to bring comfort, and to spark creativity in ways that go beyond the stitches. Through my store, my teaching, and my designs, I aim to share that passion with the world, one handmade creation at a time.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, the three qualities that were most impactful were resilience, creativity, and community-building.
Resilience – Life threw a lot of challenges my way, from an abusive marriage to career setbacks due to injury. But through it all, I refused to give up. That persistence and willingness to adapt helped me carve out a path that aligned with my true passion. Advice: For those early in their journey, know that setbacks are not the end of the road—they’re just redirections. Keep pushing forward, be open to change, and trust that even tough experiences are shaping you for something greater.
Creativity – I’ve always loved fiber arts, but turning that passion into a business required thinking outside the box. From designing unique crochet patterns to creating a welcoming space for crafters, creativity has been at the heart of everything I do. Advice: Don’t be afraid to experiment and make mistakes. Creativity isn’t about perfection; it’s about exploring, learning, and growing. Try new things, find inspiration in unexpected places, and most importantly, let your passion shine through in your work.
Community-Building – Teal Dragonfly Creations isn’t just a store; it’s a place where people connect, learn, and support each other. Creating that sense of belonging has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey. Advice: Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. Engage with your community, whether in person or online. Offer value, share knowledge, and build relationships—because success is so much sweeter when it’s shared.
For anyone starting their journey, remember: stay resilient, nurture your creativity, and build meaningful connections. Those three things will take you further than you ever imagined.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I start to feel overwhelmed, I remind myself that I don’t have to go through it alone. I lean on my incredible support system—my loving mom, my amazing husband, and the wonderful friends I’ve made through my fiber arts journey. Having people who truly understand and uplift me makes all the difference. Whether it’s a heartfelt conversation, a little encouragement, help on tasks in the store, or just knowing someone is there to listen, their support helps me regain my balance when life feels like too much.
One of the best things I’ve done for myself is staying connected with my crafting community. I host two craft groups a week and a prayer shawl ministry, both of which provide a space for creativity, laughter, and emotional support. Gathering with like-minded people reminds me why I love fiber arts so much—it’s not just about making things; it’s about the connections we build through them. And now, with my sweet new puppy by my side, I have an extra source of comfort and joy, reminding me to slow down and appreciate life’s little moments.
For anyone struggling with overwhelm, my advice is simple: find your people. Surround yourself with those who lift you up, whether it’s family, friends, or a community that shares your passions. Join a club, take a class, or reach out to others who understand what you’re going through. Having a strong support system, engaging in activities that bring you peace, and even finding joy in the companionship of a pet can make all the difference. You don’t have to face life’s challenges alone—lean into the people and passions that bring you comfort and strength.
