Meet Rutvij Reddy Seelam

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rutvij Reddy Seelam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Rutvij Reddy, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

For me, creativity is sparked by the initial thoughts and emotions I feel when I come across something inspiring, whether it’s a film, a photo, a piece of writing, or even a casual conversation. That first reaction often leads to visual ideas or moods I want to explore further. Music is also a huge source of energy for me. It helps shape tone, rhythm, and emotion, sometimes even guiding a visual concept before I pick up a camera. I stay curious and constantly look at how other artists in the industry are evolving their craft. Watching how people push boundaries creatively motivates me to keep experimenting and growing in my work.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I work as a cinematographer and photographer, and for me, it’s all about helping stories find their visual language. Whether I’m working on a feature film, a short narrative, a music video, or commercial content, my focus is always the same: how can the visuals deepen the emotional experience while keeping the image aesthetically appealing? I’m drawn to projects that explore strong visual moods, where camera movement, lighting, and composition all serve a clear creative purpose.
What excites me most right now is how flexible the medium has become. I’ve had the chance to shoot a feature film, which really shaped how I approach long-form storytelling. At the same time, I’m exploring short-form and vertical formats, where you have to say more with less. It’s also about the experiences. The stories I come across, the people I meet, the places I visit, the emotions shared on set, the long hours that turn into unforgettable memories, and even the unexpected challenges that push me to grow, all of it is part of what makes this work so rewarding.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Curiosity is where it all begins for me. It keeps me engaged, constantly learning, and open to new ways of seeing the craft. That curiosity naturally feeds into visual intent. The more I observe and absorb, the more intentional I become with my choices, in lighting, framing, or movement. And none of that happens in isolation. That’s where collaboration comes in. Filmmaking is a collective art form, and I deeply value clear communication, creative exchange, and building trust with the team. When curiosity drives the process, visual intent sharpens it, and collaboration brings it all to life.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

I don’t think there’s been just one person, it’s been a combination of mentors, collaborators, and peers who’ve shaped my growth. But if I had to choose, it’s the directors and fellow creatives I’ve worked with closely. Their trust, feedback, and openness have challenged me to push beyond just the technical side of cinematography and focus on emotion, story, and collaboration. I’ve learned just as much on set from a conversation between setups as I have from formal education. It’s those shared experiences that have helped me grow the most.
