We were lucky to catch up with Rutvik Katuri recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rutvik, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self-discipline is deeply rooted in a mantra I embraced from a young age: ‘తక్షణమే,’ which means ‘Right now’ in Telugu. This taught me the value of immediacy and not delaying actions that could be completed at the moment. Over the years, this mantra has helped me not only in managing my time effectively but also become second nature, guiding me to prioritize projects efficiently and maintain a proactive stance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Born in India and raised in the US, my dual heritage has given me a unique perspective on color and form, elements that are vividly reflected in my work through vibrant colors and bold, edgy shapes. This blend of influences can be seen in my recent Art Soirée, ‘Fierce Femmes,’ which is currently being toured at Foley Hoag for two months. This collection is my best work to date, celebrating the elegance, strength, and beauty of women through compelling beauty photographs.
I invite you to experience this celebration of feminine strength and artistry. Looking forward, I am excited to continue exploring new themes and techniques that challenge traditional perceptions of beauty and fashion photography.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As an artist who embraces entrepreneurship, I’ve found that marketing, communication, and technical skills have been crucial.
I gained invaluable business insights from my entrepreneurial parents, which provided me with a significant advantage early in my career. For those just beginning their artistic journey, I strongly recommend pursuing business education. Understanding the business side, which is often neglected by artists, is crucial for sustaining a successful career.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Meditation has been an integral part of my life. When I feel overwhelmed, it allows me to pause, breathe deeply, and gain clarity. Interestingly, I’ve found that many of the decisions we struggle with are ones we’ve already made subconsciously. Meditation helps me understand the ‘why’ behind my choices.
My advice is to sit still in a comfortable position for 15-20 minutes a day; this practice will gradually help you find stillness in everyday aspects of life. It’s not just about managing tasks but also about understanding our own minds better.
