Meet Ruxin Liang

We were lucky to catch up with Ruxin Liang recently and have shared our conversation below.

Ruxin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

My purpose have always been driven by my passion. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been fascinated by animated films and game – it sparked my curiosity and excitement. I started exploring 2D skills and techniques, hoping to one day be part of the animation and game industry. That passion eventually led me to the Computer 3D Animation program at the School of Visual Arts. After stepping into the industry, I spent even more time honing my 3D skills and developing my artistic vision. As I grew in the field, my goals became clearer and more ambitious. But through it all, my passion and enthusiasm have remained the driving forces behind everything I do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Ruxin Liang, a 3D artist and director specializing in animation, creative commercial, and game art, with a focus on blending 2D and 3D aesthetics. My work explores the intersection of top technology and artistic storytelling to create visually compelling and emotionally resonant experiences.
Currently, I work as a 3D artist at BUCK, a creative studio known for its animation, design, and storytelling. At BUCK, I’ve contributed to commercial projects with Apple, Airbnb, Microsoft, GitHub, Amazon, Meta “Meta x Murakami at The Broad,” and Beats, worked on the BUCK original game “Let’s Revolution!,” and worked on game trailers for Yuga Labs.
Beyond my professional work, I’m passionate about independent creative projects, such as my animated short film “Unsurpassed Team,” which I directed and led as art director and 3D artist. The film has gained international recognition, winning multiple awards and screening at major international film festivals. It showcases my approach to stylized 3D character design, intricate world-building, and emotionally engaging storytelling.
I’m also deeply interested in game development, focusing on narrative-driven experiences that integrate the latest technology. I’m currently collaborating with level artist Feifan on “Animal Village,” an interactive game demo that continues our exploration of 2D-3D hybrid aesthetics within a magical world. This project builds upon my previous work in interactive storytelling, and I’m excited about its potential to evolve into a fully realized game experience.
I look forward to engaging more people through my animations, game projects, and future collaborations. As I continue to grow as an artist and director, my goal is to push the boundaries of technology and artistic expression, creating immersive worlds that connect with audiences in meaningful and innovative ways.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I believe the most important qualities are a drive for challenges, a strong aesthetic, and solid 3D skills.
In the 3D field, having the desire to take on challenges allows you to push boundaries and accomplish things that may seem impossible. Ambition is also an important trait for self-improvement, as it drives you to keep learning and expanding your skill set. Aesthetic can be developed over time and plays a key role in enhancing creativity, helping to shape unique artistic styles, which is especially crucial for original works. 3D technical skills are an essential foundation – having a strong technical background allows you to achieve most of your goals and work more efficiently. It is indispensable in the industry, and a deep understanding of the technical side also reflects experience and expertise.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

In my spare time, I’ve been working on “Animal Village” with talented Level Artist Feifan from Tencent Timi who has extensive game development experience. We’re excited to collaborate with more partners on this project and future ones, including short films and games. We’re looking for talented game designers and 3D animators who are passionate about crafting rich stories and engaging gameplay with us in our spare time, or those who would love to create breathtaking new worlds in animated film. If you’re interested, we’d love to hear from you!
