Meet Ryan Ashe

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ryan Ashe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ryan below.

Hi Ryan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My brother, Conor and I have always known what we wanted to do from a very young age. Growing up in a post 80’s and early 90’s cultural resurgence of sorts electric guitars and rock band imagery were everywhere. From the tv shows we watched like Ninja Turtles, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and who could forget Gumby? This was also a time where MTV was making incredible waves showcasing thousands of iconic artists to the world, some for the very first time. Inspiration was everywhere and that all came to a head when Conor and I saw School of Rock for the first time in 2002. Watching kids our age take to the stage like rock stars was incredibly inspiring. And we knew we had to try it for ourselves.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Ryan Ashe and I’m the Vice President of Ashe Brothers Entertainment. My brother and I started this company a few years back in order to do business in California and Illinois, two states in which we currently reside. Our musical project is called the Ashe Brothers (formerly Common Allies).

We perform most commonly as a duo and write original music together as well. We set ourselves apart via our ability to put an original spin on the artists we cover, with the assistance of our spacey instrumental jams and tight vocal harmony.

Aside from recording new original singles, the most prominent thing we have in the works is that we’re going to be touring Ireland this upcoming September. Better yet, everyone is invited! We’ll be doing a bus tour of the southern most landmarks in The Emerald Isle, performing sets in 3 cities, and those who ride with us will have opportunity to have the journey of a lifetime.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Understand the importance of establishing a good rapport. This is super helpful when in the process of booking new work and connecting with new fans and business associates. This can be as simple as having a personable conversation with someone and asking them about themselves, beyond the realm of basic small talk. If you find you share a common ground or perspective, it can make all the difference in how the relationship unfolds.

Practice all the time. As a performer, this is unbelievably important. If you don’t hone your craft, nobody will find you remarkable or interesting. Do it for the love of it and make sure your inspiration is genuine. Genuine inspiration is the cultural glue of your fandom.

Be consistent. If you’re not delivering new material or content, to keep your fan base interested, you’ll fizzle into obscurity. This is the most obvious piece of advice here, but it’s execution requires discipline, and discipline is a difficult thing to incorporate daily as a creative.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
It’s always a wonderful idea to continue improving in areas where you fall short, however, not everyone is going to be a master of all trades. Never stop learning, but I feel like you’ll achieve the most if you focus on playing to your strengths.

Our strengths, for example, lie in our musical creativity. One of us writes the lion’s share of the lyrics and performs the more rhythm oriented instrumentation. The other delivers beautiful vocal harmonies and c0mpletes the fullness of the sound through his precise and calculated lead guitar work. However, we recognized that we needed a lot of help when it came to branding on social media, so we hired somebody.

Never have too much pride to expand your team if you feel you are lacking in a certain area. Also, what you do takes a lot of time, investment, love, and effort. If you can save time by bringing on more people and it’s financially feasible, then by all means, do so.
