We were lucky to catch up with Ryan DeSiato recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
First off, I want to thank Matt Price and Voyage for including me in this series. I’d like to start with the question about where my resilience came from, and how it’s grown over the past few years.
For me, resilience is one of the most precious and highly respected attributes that I value and appreciate in myself, those around me and the people that I love.
It’s never free… Resilience is nearly always the by-product of deep pain, loss or friction. But, without going down a philosophical rabbit hole, I can say with confidence that God gave me the opportunity to open my eyes to the possibilities ‘in suffering’. To learn to see suffering and difficulty as something to utilize and learn from. Resilience is about Reframing what we perceive as negative and finding the lesson in the perception for our benefit.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a full-time singer, guitarist & songwriter. I’ve been primarily focused on growing as a live performer over the past few years. In January of 2023, I began actively pursuing a new discipline in the music industry that I’ve dabbled in over the past few years. I started the process of learning Music /Sync Licensing for media like TV, Film and online content.
I took Michael Elsner’s course on sync licensing and much of my energy over the past 8 months has been focused on creating music for this new discipline. Taking Michael’s course has been incredibly encouraging and inspiring for me. I’ve created 4 new EP’s of music that I’m working to release for my listening audience and to license for other interested music supervisors and music libraries.
The past few years I’ve been blessed with opportunities to write for films and create music for global art installations. In 2021, I won “Best Score” for my original song “Down to The River”. I produced this song with Lang Freeman for the short film ‘Perdition.’ It’s fun and inspiring to dive deeper into the sync license world. I look forward to growing more and more in this market and discipline set.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
#1. Humility
#2. Discipline
#3. Resilience
My advice for anyone starting any artistic project, business venture or self-improvement discipline would be to slow down and “eat the elephant” one bite at a time. When you commit, don’t quit. Celebrate your wins lightly, but celebrate them. When you fail, celebrate this, too. You gain more from failure than wins. Frame the failure as a lesson and use it to grow.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The last few years I’ve read many great books that have inspired and helped me build strong habits. James Clear’s book, ‘Atomic Habits’ was one of my favorites.
The most influential and helpful book that I continue to read has been the book of Proverbs from the Bible. This book, written by Solomon is full of direct guidance and ‘impactful nuggets of wisdom’ that have helped me make better decisions and grow in the purpose God has for my life.
It says in Proverbs “Seek knowledge, gain understanding and seek wisdom.” This is pretty meta, but the act of seeking out wisdom and understanding is how we grow in wisdom and understanding.
