We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Powell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I believe in Jesus Christ, that’s my foundation. I also love the evolution of art and learning new crafts to supplement my craft to see what new things I can create. I’ve never been a fan of stagnancy, so whenever I see my work stuck at one level for too long, I feel I must push myself to improve. Off topic, I know sometimes that small business owners can have “slow months” and it can affect us heavily, but I really just trust God to keep me going and to keep working on my craft during the downtime. It literally just takes one good day to change everything for the next year-5 years.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
So, my brand of photography mainly focuses on servicing brands, businesses, fashion, videography, product photography.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One skill that is important to have (this isn’t a technical skill) is having the ability to evolve, learn, and unlearn when it comes to your craft. Now that I look at what I wrote, it’s also a good thing to have outside of your craft and in business. Anyway, I’m a photographer of course. I love to visualize different ways of shooting and visualizing different shots, and brainstorming how i wound be able to accomplish that shot/goal with the inventory that i already have. Even when I’m nowhere near my camera. So, when I get to my studio or my equipment, i’m able to accomplish it as close as possible, or even SURPASS that goal. Evolution can occur even when you aren’t in your artistic space. Having the willingness to evolve is can trickle down to your business practices and artistic practices. Be proud of EVERYTHING you create, but just know that there’s levels to your craft that you can reach if you open your mind to doing new things.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes! Beauty and skincare brands, fashion brands, seasoned models, business brands! Product brands! I love to shoot those things and I’m beginning to have an affinity for it! My apologies for the short answer, haha.
